I think there’s a parallel to be found with both Australia and the US…. Conservative side of politics holding power and simply brassing out the corruption and incompetence within their ranks thinking they can ride it out and hold power, that being the only objective.

I don’t mean to suggest the more liberal side will offer up any contrasting miracle of improvement as that remains to be seen but what we have seen is the take over and owning of the political landscape by corporate interests…

the Greens in Australia have been pushing the line of State Capture. I think it’s valid.

I’ve been saying this for ages, although I think it’s a bit more subtle - people are conditioned to think that people with a posh accent are smarter than them, and have their interests at heart. It manifests in many ways, not least that when you see people who are from regions of England in positions of prominence, e.g. academics, other experts, even actors, they have in many cases lost their accent to be taken more seriously. Most people don’t even know they have that attitude, but it’s doubled down on at every opportunity. Remember all the nonsense that’s been said about Johnson, and indeed Mogg, about how incredibly clever they were under the ‘facade’? It’s obvious pish but people lap it up because they’re posh so they believe it. People want to believe it because British society is organised that way, so they just automatically go that way. It’s all subconscious, and it’s not really managed from anywhere, but it’s one of the fundamental things wrong with the UK.

Edit - and you’re right that it’s far less prevalent in Scotland; partly because a certain ‘type’ of Scottish accent was always viewed in the same way, and also because the Scottish parliament has let us see and hear more of our own accents being our politicians and leaders. That’s also true in Wales now, they hear Welsh voices talking about health, the economy, etc. But if you try doing that on TV with a Birmingham accent, or West Country, or East Anglian, or Geordie, you won’t be taken seriously.

He appears to be well short of 100, and with no chance of getting there. Senior Tories are telling him not to stand, and several right wingers like Badenoch, Steve Baker and Lord Frost have come out for Sunak. There are rumors that he’s told his key donors that he’s not going to stand as it would be humiliating for him to announce his candidacy and then fail to get 100 backers.

At present it looks like Sunak may be the only one to reach 100 by Monday, in which case there’ll be no need to get the lunatic members involved.
