This. You're left scratching your head going wtf?! Seriously!? Does it say so much about the quality of the other potential candidates? Or is assuming power now a political death knell, a poisoned chalice that nobody actually wants?
I think there’s a parallel to be found with both Australia and the US…. Conservative side of politics holding power and simply brassing out the corruption and incompetence within their ranks thinking they can ride it out and hold power, that being the only objective.
A little. They're all lightweights with little or no prospect of actually doing things to help the country out of the mess 12 years of their party being in power has created. However, Johnson isn't any different on that front. He's a feckless sleaze who likes the title of PM and nothing else about the role. He just has something about him, I suppose you might call it charisma, that seems to appeal to certain people. That's his point of difference from the others.

This resonates with me. Democracy and the well being of the country at large is under thread, my worry is the unlike the US the British might be fooled again.Guy Smiley wrote: ↑Fri Oct 21, 2022 9:15 pmI think there’s a parallel to be found with both Australia and the US…. I don’t mean to suggest the more liberal side will offer up any contrasting miracle of improvement as that remains to be seen but what we have seen is the take over and owning of the political landscape by corporate interests…
the Greens in Australia have been pushing the line of State Capture. I think it’s valid.

Johnson portrays himself as a jolly little fellow, the sort you could get on with.
Until he is confronted with uncomfortable facts and then he immediately turns into a spoilt wee shite who lashes out at everyone around him when he doesn't get what he demands he is entitled to - there's footage of him at mayoral meetings in London that show this only too well. It also fits with what everyone who has had the misfortune to deal with him says.
He was never fit to be in a major office, nothing has changed

Well, quite. However, if you know that then you're immune to his supposed charms. For a bewildering number of people, the zipline stunt, rugby tackling a small child, etc. and the general bumbling act is enough for them to think he's alright not matter the ever growing mountain of evidence to the contrary.
Problem is, he's perfected his cheeky chappie, poshboy faux scallywag persona on BBC on TV since the early '90's. So he's got brand recognition.Tichtheid wrote: ↑Fri Oct 21, 2022 9:53 pmsockwithaticket wrote: ↑Fri Oct 21, 2022 9:41 pmA little. And when things become existential, brand recognition becomes important.
HIGNFY has a lot to answer for.

Easy one to dodge, threaten to defect from the Tories if they try to put pressure on you, they are then powerless as they will still be the MP until the next election.SaintK wrote: ↑Sat Oct 22, 2022 9:43 amYep!! There is still a strong 'doff the cap' to your betters mentality, in parts of England predominately, where folk think that the posh Lord of the Manor has a god given right to be in charge and tell them what to do. They enjoy their serfdom. If he also seems a 'jolly chap' and makes them laugh then even better. This runs parallel with an innate belief in these people that ordinary folk aren't capable of being in charge and running the country, they don't have the posh education, and if they try and they must be 'Socialists or Communists' or suchlike. The Blonde Bumblecunt plays the jolly Lord of the Manor role very well. In parts of the country however, such as Scotland, this mentality has disappeared and the explains why the likes of the Fat Slug are seen with utter contempt and explains why he shits himself every time he comes north of the border and visits are carefully controlled. He has done more walkabouts in Kiev than he has in Scotland. He is a Cnut.C69 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 22, 2022 8:47 amI certainly didn't fall for his foppish buffoonery wrapped around a nasty racist bigoted plutocratic cuntEnergiseR2 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 22, 2022 7:30 am We all fell for that. Talking of which I see Sir (where the fuck did that come from) James Duddridge is trying to outdo Dorries for the Order of the Brown Nose medal with Boris. Without a doubt he will think he can make it to Foreign Secretary which is probably about right for this government as he is a talentless cock.

Talentless skank does what she does best. Does she charge by the hour or the result?
I’ve been saying this for ages, although I think it’s a bit more subtle - people are conditioned to think that people with a posh accent are smarter than them, and have their interests at heart. It manifests in many ways, not least that when you see people who are from regions of England in positions of prominence, e.g. academics, other experts, even actors, they have in many cases lost their accent to be taken more seriously. Most people don’t even know they have that attitude, but it’s doubled down on at every opportunity. Remember all the nonsense that’s been said about Johnson, and indeed Mogg, about how incredibly clever they were under the ‘facade’? It’s obvious pish but people lap it up because they’re posh so they believe it. People want to believe it because British society is organised that way, so they just automatically go that way. It’s all subconscious, and it’s not really managed from anywhere, but it’s one of the fundamental things wrong with the UK.dpedin wrote: ↑Sat Oct 22, 2022 10:59 amThere is still a strong 'doff the cap' to your betters mentality, in parts of England predominately, where folk think that the posh Lord of the Manor has a god given right to be in charge and tell them what to do. He appears to be well short of 100, and with no chance of getting there. Senior Tories are telling him not to stand, and several right wingers like Badenoch, Steve Baker and Lord Frost have come out for Sunak. There are rumors that he’s told his key donors that he’s not going to stand as it would be humiliating for him to announce his candidacy and then fail to get 100 backers.fishfoodie wrote: ↑Sat Oct 22, 2022 7:22 pm Why do I have a feeling like Team Bumblecunt is telling everyone that he has 100 votes, but he's lying, because only ~60 have publicly committed to him, so he needs to pretend that he's already over the line, so other MPsfigure they'll back the winning ticket.
