Fun Fact: A total of 2,509 Carnegie libraries were built between 1883 and 1929, including some belonging to public and university library systems. 1,689 were built in the United States, 660 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, 125 in Canada, and 25 others in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Serbia, Belgium, France, the Caribbean, Mauritius, Malaysia, and Fiji.
The small town where my parents live are just set to move out of theirs after 115 years (to a bigger, more accessible one) but supposedly 800 are still used as libraries.

Someone had far too much time on their hands if they could come up with a design like this. Apparently it was used for study physical oceanography, studying the properties of the water column.
Often, studies like these improved the kill-chain for torpedoes and other submarine munitions.
The side-effect of learning about a region’s water column is greater understanding of the atmospheric-pelagic interactions of a given area to gain better understanding of climate change and regional weather models.
I know it's supposed to do that, but I would absolutely shit myself if I was on the ship and it started tipping up like that.
Maiden voyage: "Right lads, strap yourselves into the seats space-shuttle-takeoff-stylee, we're going to see if this thing works..."

What are we looking at here?
Irish concept of "up periscope"

For those times when you unexpectedly run out of ammo, don't fear. If you live in Oklahoma or Alabama, no problem: a quick trip to the nearest grocery store will see you right.
An ice cream van that floated out to sea has been rescued by coast guards in Cornwall after becoming almost fully submerged.
The Kelly’s van found itself in uncharted waters when it became stuck on sand at the western end of Harlyn Bay beach, North Cornwall, as the tide began to turn on Sunday afternoon.

Should now change the ice cream van song to 'Octopus's Garden'

Meet Hollywood, so called for his movie star good looks.
A blurry shot of the Pine Marten I was delighted to see skipping thru the garden
and I forgot about this pair, who freaked me out late one night as I was about to go to bed, & I heard this weird growling outside, & it was either Badger foreplay, or else they were ripping the shit out of each other.

I set my trail camera up a year ago and all I got were phots of fox's arses and a closeup of a hedgehog's spines. I may put it on the house or some garden furniture pointing into the trees, that looks a better bet.

Good shots.
i have squirrels and badgers in the garden. Recently a Pine Martin has been visiting and causing havoc. Wrecking all the squirrel feeders. Just spent the afternoon trying to construct items to stop the martin getting food that is out down for other animals.
The martin is even coming during the days too.

It was fun stumbling upon this gem again
I cannot remember the poster who took the script from a PR thread but it's priceless.

Located in Mount Macedon Cemetery, Victoria, Australia, this gravestone features an epic female sculpture entitled “Asleep.” Laurence Matheson’s widow, Christina Matheson, commissioned Peter Schipperheyn to design this life-size memorial in a loving tribute to an eternal and undying love.
