The chief economist of the Institute of International Finance is predicting Russian GDP will drop by 30% by the end of 2022. That's a complete economic collapse.

That's a hell of a long time though, who knows what our own might be like by then.

I'm wondering:

1. What ammo are they going to use, because I can't imagine them having a load of ammo lying around for a gun they haven't used in decades ?

2. Who is going to crew these museum pieces ?, because they'll need a long time to train up, & practice their gunner on a tank that uses manual sights from the 1950's !!!

3. When they get proficient with their gunnery, they still won't be able kill any of the tanks they'll be facing, because they'll still be under-gunned, & their own armor was considered too thin in the 1970s, so the only function they fill will be to use up Anti-Tank weapons.

Are we actually going to see Donetsk "separatists" (really just Russia) fielding T55s, with guys riding them wearing WW2 helmets and armed with Mosin Nagants, like they're storming Berlin or something?

Seems entirely likely. The only new element would be the T55, and "separatists" fielded an IS3 and T34 (up armoured mad max style) in 2014.

Battalions of T55s crewed by people with no clue what they're doing, would be totally normal for the Russian side in Ukraine. Totally in keeping with deploying a WW2 armoured train.

I'm really struggling to get my head around Putin's deplorable lack of concern in his own troops' welfare.

I worked with MoD for a fair while on logistics, and it was always an article of faith that - if all else has to be cannibalised, bodged or delayed - the medevac and medical equipment was always first priority. (Well, strictly, strategic deterrent was first priority but that doesn't need too many helicopter stretchers and that was always invisible to us anyway)

One of the business drivers for a £100M+ inventory transformation project was a soldier on an armoured vehicle was killed by an IED as the systems weren't configured to issue the correct size body protective equipment in the context of the vehicle. This was universally agreed to be unacceptable.

You can't send young lads and lasses away to die without doing everything in your power to keep them safe and to look after them if worse comes to worst.

Russia aren't even recovering or burying bodies, or providing any support to bereaved families. The medical supplies are a joke. The, equipment, spares and fuel have all been (pardon pun) syphoned off.

Now it looks like they're going to send conscripts to pretty much certain death in obsolete vehicles with equipment their grandfathers might have used.

Plenty of stuff in this war has been dreadful, but this is a different form of scumbaggery.

It's not enough to make me feel sorry for the orc scummers murdering civilians, but it's sickening nonetheless.

I'm impressed Russia are sustaining offensives with the losses. I guess Ukraine are being careful with their resources while waiting for their opponent to exhaust their resources.

If it's any consolation, I don't think there's a chance in hell they'll field any serious numbers of T-62s.

This has all the signs of just being something they've told Putin they will do, fully in the knowledge that it's impossible, but at least it looks like they're doing something.

They are sending the rabble and the poorer of the ethnic minorities to war. Putin doesn't care about their lives.

Russia's advantage over Ukraine in this war is naval power and human resources. And I get the feeling that they'll keep throwing bodies at this war even if equipped with peaks and forks.

Meanwhile, each death on the Ukrainian side is a blow, never mind all the sophisticated equipment the country may be receiving.

To be fair, that's been military recruitment all through history. It's easier to recruit from areas where there are few other opportunities.

And while one section of the population, not directly impacted by the deaths of soldiers, also thinks that's okay, are there no rumblings of revolution among these ethnic groups treated with such disregard?
