Hosting the cup is worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the local economy and post Covid would show off the safest country in the world, New Zealand. Massive marketing boost for us. I fail to see why it is up to the NZ taxpayer to boost Britain's tarnished image.

If Radcliffe wants the cup he can come and get it. If it's about showing off the AC75s they can do one of their world series regattas on The Solent without the mug on the line. That is win-win.

At the moment it fees a little like a closed shop... I guess if the profile got bigger it will attract more millionaires... and become even more corporate... At least at the moment most competitors have been sailing nations. Guess it's finding the right balance.

The new entrants can buy (comparatively cheaply) one of the last generation hulls and drawings from previous entrants. Thus they get a good start on the design and a boat to train on. Of course each cycle it changes a bit but that would be a good start. At least that's the 'carrot'. I'd like to see it like it was back in, say, Freemantle. About 8 challengers and 2 or 3 defenders - and only one of them sunk. But means 2 sets of parallel round robins.

You couldn't have 'out of schedule' challenges. It runs on 3 or 4 year cycles and everything is geared to having your boat ready 10-12 months out. Some sneaky cunt waits in the wings for 7 years getting their boat tuned and throws out a challenge for a year early. Na, not realistic.

I lived there for 28 years and actually had my Australian citizenship ceremony there, in the Town Hall... back in 92. Well before the current hoopla surrounding the event, I was sworn in by the Mayor and serenaded with a collection of Australian folk songs sung by Kiwi folk singer, John Hore... complete with massive Kiwi sticker on his guitar case clearly visible to everyone assembled. You have to love irony.

I've been somewhat involved, and following the AC since the first challenge in what, about '86/87? For me Fremantle was the best regatta and nearly the last of the multi-home defense events. I wish we could get it back to that but a) NZ sure as shit doesn't have the funds, and b) they need to bring the boats back to being, well, boats.

I do love the tech though, and when you think back to how far they've come from the lumbering 12m tanks. 50 knots FFS.

Been developing that over the last 18 months. It's also big in development around North America too, trying to get foiling power boats commercialised, as I think they are wanting to reduce foreshore damage on the big lakes around here. I have a rich mate interested (just to be first on the lake), but he likes his wake surfing too much I think. Not necessarily hydrogen (alternative) powered but it's a two-part win if you ask me.
