Having been at uni with medical students, they are not scientists (some obviously are, but more the GPs etc). They have the grounding that they could be, but it's more about making connections. Get symptoms, get idea of person, come up with idea of ailment, prescribe best medicine. Minds busy making connections all the time, but not necessarily needing to worry about actual science, could easily fall prey for conspiracy theories etc.

But not always. Spanish flu second wave was way more lethal than the first.
Less than 1% fatal rate is not going to impact it's evolution at all as it is though. It's not going to burn through all it's hosts with a fatality rate that low anyway, there's no pressure whatsoever on fatality rate. Transmission is always likely to increase is more the issue, since increasing transmissibility is an immediate evolutionary advantage.
I'm not sure how your post relates to mine?

Even if 1% lethality was to remain unchanged with a new more transmittable strain, deaths will increase due to more people having it.

It will also increase the risk of further mutations in a more dangerous direction and possibly making current vaccines ineffective.
It was more just continuing the conversation, targeting Biffer.

Nearly 330k doses delivered on Friday then. Will be interesting to see what the weekend numbers look like tomorrow and Monday

Friends of my parents, both in their 90s have their jab coming up on Friday, her first comment, I can pop into Lidl then seeing as it's next door to the clinic...FFS....

I've given up being amazed by anything surrounding how people are viewing the pandemic these days. Just glad that the numbers appear to be dropping through the floor locally

90 year olds are probably all suffering from various stages of dementia. It’s just what happens at that age unfortunately.

I’m not trying to start a fight, but a 90 year old brain is not 100% intact any more. Medically it’s just not as effective as it was 10 or more years ago. Brains deteriorate. It’s normal. It’s ok.

I agree, I see it day to day, forgetfulness, confusion, walking into a room and standing there till someone asks why are you here?. And that's just me...
However, going into Lidl because they had the jab 10 mins previously, even they're not that twp. ...

New vaccination rate target - 5 million doses per week.

Seeing as we appear to have pretty much reached tge 2 million rate, at least on a daily basis, it's good to see a stretch target that has some semblance of reality in it's basis

That would be a great target to reach. All adults double dosed before next winter with that schedule right?

At that schedule we'd be talking June/July I think, depending on how quickly we'd reached that level. Allow a month for the full immunity to kick in and we would be completely clear by August, barring a severe mutation

Not sure which thread to put this in ...

https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/13851 ... budget/amp

Tax rise warning: Sunak planning new hikes - but stamp duty and council tax could be AXED

Looks like corp tax being the main target. Sounds like the right thing to do at the moment. Tax on profits.

Wealth tax would be an unfair shambles. And not certain how this “ proportional property tax” is going to look. But this whole secondary taxing of the value of net purchased assets is grossly wrong in my view.

With corp tax, there should also be significant target of multinationals doing significant trading within but not “based” in the UK. Those with local “unprofitable” holdings companies. Eg Amazon in UK.

Assume would have more control to manage this outside of the EU.

Covid vaccinations for Saturday - 298,087. Which sounds like it's maybe ad ews, as it's down from the 320k for Friday. However, for reasons unknown to man nor beast, Scotland and Wales report daily except for weekends. So they're still ramping up - I'd expect it tomlook somewhere around 335kish, maybe 340, once it's all worked out.

In total now 4.3 million known doses delivered in the UK. For all the rest of the shitshow, I am genuinely impressed

That's very good for a Saturday. It's taken about a month to get to 2m doses a week. I assumed it would take longer, I'm also impressed.

Some of the media "experts" doubted we would hit that rate at all.

It's all a bit unclear. But it's not matching what's been seen in the US and UK, the two countries with the widest deployment of Pfizer

And I still don't get it. I've been pretty scathing where they've fucked up (and it's a long list) but I've also been pretty complimentary where they'be got it right - which is basically vaccine policy. I've even defended them where some people have been complaining in this area why they haven't done better.

Great to see the NHS not just hitting but exceding vaccination figures.
Contrast this with the awful track and trace issues and the terrible free school food packages.

This suggests that the people being vaccinated were old and very frail, which might explain why:

Good point. They’ll stop complaining if they get threatened with hospital dinners as an alternative.

But in seriousness I had always thought they’d used contractors for track and trace as the efficiently run NHS wouldn’t have the capacity of administrators to take on track and trace on top of what they are already dealing with. Or would it have been manageable and no complaints about trying to do this extra work?
