Great for the neutral.

Canterbury team to play Manawatu:

Andrew Knewstubb, Chay Fihaki, Ngane Punivai, Rameka Poihipi, Isaiah Punivai, Fergus Burke, Ere Enari, Whetukamokamo Douglas, Billy Harmon, Reed Prinsep (c), Sam Darry, Luke Romano, Tamaiti Williams, Scott Mellow, Finlay Brewis. Reserves: Shilo Klein, Lewis Ponini, Fletcher Newell, Cullen Grace, Tom Christie, Mitchell Drummond, Brett Cameron, Josh McKay.

I don't understand all the rotation. We're nowhere near good enough this year to trot out a 'B' team and expect to win comfortably.

Good news is that Burke continues to start.

It's a short season and the wider squad members need to start sometime? It's a rookie front rowand back three but otherwise it's not far off our best team. And with respect to Manawatu, they are a very weak team.

He is a naturalised Japanese, carrying a Japanese passport, but is not eligible to represent Japan because he has already played for the ABs. Despite that, he is not accepted as a Japanese in Top League because he is not eligible to play for Japan.

They don't do dual citizenship, so when you naturalise, you are required to give up your former nationality.

Big one is probably Niko Jones in line for his Auckland debut off the bench.

Some of the smaller sides are pale imitations of their former selves when they had availability of their All Blacks.

Taranaki is one. Manawatu is another.

It's largely injuries, not rotation. McLeod, McAlister, Lienert-Brown, Jager, Allan, Saunders and Mataele are all unavailable for this game.

Watching a recording of this match. Fergus Burke has already shown more potential than Brett Cameron has done across his entire career. And I think Poihipi and Punivai are developing into a very handy midfield pairing.

Burke is a top drawer 10 alright. I regarded this Canterbury side as a bunch of near no names, but I still knew they would be quality. Playing lower grade rugby in Christchurch in 2002 I got to see a lot of premier grade rugger up close and trust me, the standard is impressively high.

The game against Manawatu tonight had the feel of an early season Ranfurly Shield match against a strong Heartland side like Wanganui. Manawatu were up for the challenge, but clearly outgunned.

I saw enough yesterday to suggest to me that Fergus Burke is now clearly the 2nd best first-five in the CRFU and Crusaders systems, behind Richie Mo'unga. Reuben Thorne needs to start him at no.10 for the rest of this season and Roberston needs to ease him into SR in 2021. Burke is a good size, has a good kicking game and a good running game. Most importantly he looks to have a great temprament.

Time for Cameron to pursue his options elsewhere - somewhere like the Hurricanes perhaps where he and Garden-Bachop could duke it out for the starting spot.
