No, I read a while back that the Heartland unions have organised local home and away fixtures with neighboring unions. From memory they are all going to play around 6 games. Not a proper season but at least they've play some Rugby.
Cool, didn't know that.
As AC says not a proper season, but everyone still getting a bit of a season. And one advantage is that teams like the Mighty Nua are not using loan players, so all club players are getting a proper crack. Think I saw that Nua is actually playing Central Hawkes Bay too!
Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury drew 31-all on Saturday in another cracking local derby, this time played in Timaru.

Seems an odd selection to me, given at full strength I wouldn't have thought he'd actually be in our best loose forward trio?
6. Grace/Sanders
7. Christie
8. Douglas
Who misses out?
Also not sure what Drummond/Douglas did wrong.

Reed Prinsep (c),
Sam Whitelock,
Luke Romano,
Fletcher Newell,
Codie Taylor,
Joe Moody.
Reserves: Shilo Klein, Finlay Brewis, Tamaiti Williams, Mitch Dunshea, Whetukamokamo Douglas, Mitchell Drummond, Richie Mo’unga, Isaiah Punivai.

interesting to move Bridge to 14, reminds me of the time the AB's made that call with Julian Savea and Joe Rokocoko before him, neither were good there and both were eventually dropped by the AB's.. is fozzie loking to see if Bridge can play there and if not drop him? mind you the other 2 'specialist' wingers named by AB's can play on both wings and reiko can cover left, no need for a 4th left winger.

That's a decent team for provincial level. Brett Cameron must be training very well if he's relegated Richie Mo'unga to the bench. It will be hard for Mo'unga to make a strong case for the All Black no.10 jersey if he can't even start at lowly Mitre 10 Cup level

I know nothing about Newell, but fair to say that's the strongest tight five named at Mitre 10 Cup level in the last decade?
That back three is also very exciting, and being able to inject Dunshea, Douglas, Drummond, and Mo'unga from the bench is a real bonus.
I've been talking him up for a couple of years now, and hope this is the season Enari can finally take the next step forward and show what he's capable of.

Wellington have also named their team:
Trent Renata, Connor Garden-Bachop, Billy Proctor, Vince Aso, Julian Savea, Jackson Garden-Bachop, TJ Perenara, Ardie Savea, Du’Plessis Kirifi (captain), Vaea Fifita, Naitoa Ah Kuoi, James Blackwell, Alex Fidow, Asafo Aumua, Kaliopasi Uluilakepa. Reserves: Tyrone Thompson, Morgan Poi, Josiah Tavita-Metcalfe, Taine Plumtree, Teariki Ben-Nicholas, Kemara Hauiti-Parapara, Aidan Morgan, Peter Umaga-Jensen.
That's basically a super rugby quality starting XV.

These squads will obviously get diluted massively if the AB's go into camp, but as it stands this is a SR level comp.

Yes I had no plans to watch the Otago v Auckland game.
But then on reading Auckland's matchday 23, I could not help but note the time.
Given Otago's lack of AB playing stock, this may well go like an early season Heartland Ranfurly Shield challenge.

Few more teams named.
North Harbour

Reserves: 16-Zane Turner, 17-Teague McIlroy, 18-Jimmy Roots, 19-Tim Sail, 20-Tamarau McGahan, 21-Lewis Gjatema, 22-Fini Inisi, 23-Tomas Aoake
Auckland
1-Alex Hodgman, 2-Leni Apisai, 3-Ofa Tu'ungafasi, 4-Scott Scrafton, 5-Jack Whetton, 6-Akira Ioane, 7-Adrian Choat, 8-Hoskins Sotutu, 9-Jonathan Ruru, 10-Harry Plummer, 11-Caleb Clarke, 12-TJ Faiane (c), 13-Rieko Ioane, 14-AJ Lam, 15-Jordan Trainor
Reserves: 16-Mike Sosene-Feagai, 17-Jarred Adams, 18-Angus Ta’avao, 19-Liam Hallam-Eames, 20-Blake Gibson, 21-Danny Tusitala, 22-Simon Hickey, 23-Tumua Manu
Counties Manukau
1-Ezekiel Lindenmuth, 2-Zuriel Togiatama, 3-Nepo Laulala, 4-Matiaha Martin, 5-Lyndon Dunshea (c), 6-Sam Slade, 7-Dalton Papali'i, 8-Kieran Read, 9-Jonathan Taumateine, 10-Baden Kerr, 11-Kalione Hala, 12-Orbyn Leger (c), 13-Sione Molia, 14-Kiris Kuridrani, 15-Etene Nanai-Seturo

Tasman
1-Isi Tu'ungafasi, 2-Andrew Makalio, 3-Tyrel Lomax, 4-Alex Ainley, 5-Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, 6-Shannon Frizell, 7-Sione Havilli, 8-Hugh Renton, 9-Finlay Christie, 10-Mitch Hunt (c), 11-Mark Telea, 12-Alex Nankivell, 13-Leicester Fainga'anuku, 14-Sevu Reece, 15-Will Jordan
Reserves: 16-Quentin MacDonald, 17-Kershawl Sykes-Martin, 18-Isaac Salmon, 19-Moni Ngakuru, 20-Jacob Norris, 21-Dwayne Polataivao, 22-Tim O’Malley, 23-Fetuli Paea
Highlights are probably Read's return for Counties and that Tasman backline. Could do anything.
As mentioned, there's a real disparity with ABs available - Canterbury, Wellington, Tasman, and Auckland have basically named Super Rugby quality squads. Could be a couple of fairly lopsided results this weekend.

It's a shame Darry isn't playing tonight (hard to break in ahead of Whitelock, Romano, and Dunshea admittedly, which is why he's heading to the Blues). I've heard lots of good things, but haven't seen him play yet.

Southland Stags for Sunday v Hawkes Bay
1. Ethan De Groot,
2. Greg Pleasants-Tate
3. Siate Tokolahi
4. Manaaki Selby-Rickit
5. Mike Mckee
6. Charles Alaimalo
7. Mathew James
8. Tony Lamborn (C)
9. Logan Crowley
10. Scotty Eade
11. Amanaki Nicole
12. Jaye Thompson
13. Isaac Te Tamaki
14. Rory Van Vught

17. Joe Walsh
18. Chris Apoua
19. Ray Tatafu
20. Glenn Preston
21. Raniera Takarangi
22. Greg Dyer
23. Ray Nu'u
Jaye Thompson is a real talent, I'm glad to see him starting at the 12 position, really should have kicked on long ago if he was able to reign his head in for 5 minutes. Good to see a good healthy smattering of Southlanders through out the team, overall its not the worst team I've seen them put out. I'm fairly happy with that.
