It's the Oxford vaccine that will allow access for poorer countries, as it's a lot cheaper than the mrna ones.
Cheaper and requires less sophisticated supply chain infrastructure. It is going to be practically impossible for us to maintain a -70 supply chain in rural areas of South Africa.
Yeah, that's a large factor in huge swathes of the planet.
I imagine the Russians and Chinese will be rolling out their vaccines to a fair few of their allies and areas of influence, or desired influence?

I don’t agree with everything on this thread, but I DO think that NZ getting any amount of vaccine before countries more deserving is nonsense!
They don’t need the vaccine. They have Covid under control and they are all fine. Back of the queue, Kiwis.
Don't you live in the UK? Guess you'll be waiting until everyone in South Africa gets the vaccine before getting in line won't you?
NZ put people befor the economy and have every right to vaccinate themselves and their PI neighbours (who did similar) as soon as they can and trolling them over it is just bullsh*t
and a vaccine will enable Kiwis to travel wide and far sharing with others the secrets of their successful response, so that we can all celebrate it together and learn from these timely lessons.
this for most nations would be a tongue in cheek comment

So the thread creator is trying to trill western Nations, but it turns out that, besides creating the vaccine for COVID, some are actually being useful and helpful with The Oxford vaccine being sold at little profit and a bargain price to help more people and New Zealand doing a bang-up job making sure their poorer neighbours in the Pacific Islands are covered too.

Seem our useless government truly has fucked is through their sheer ineptitude and cowardice.
Tldr - SA govt has done close to sweet fuck all about securing vaccine supplies or setting up the infrastructure to administer it.

Thankfully for most of Africa (excluding SA and Egypt) we aren't in dire need of the vaccine as badly as other places.
I hope it gets here by about May or June, but we are also expecting the usual corruption to mire the rollout.

Moderna has no supplies for Africa, while AstraZeneca has no shots for the continent in 2021 and has directed the African Union to negotiate with the Serum Institute of India, which is making the vaccine on behalf of AstraZeneca.

This is unbelievably bad. Even if we had the money and ordered we couldn't get them. Seems the rich West will use Africa to test their drugs on and then walk away.

Our Governments accepted the testing, it's not like they are abducting people from the streets and injecting them.
What becomes obviously clear is that SA needs to become more self-sufficient in many areas, as we used to be.

Don’t go back to that. The reason you haven’t negotiated anything is because your politicians are shit and corrupt. As I said earlier, several Western governments have offered debt relief and development funds to pay, as well as offers to assist with procurement, but have come up against a wall of incompetence and corruption.

In terms of COVAX front-loaded aid, UK, Norway, Spain and Australia have commited IFFIm money.
Then the likes of Bill Gates, etc, potentially Canada (and, as mentioned, NZ) may also facilitate covax from their own commited reservations.
Still, on December's overall numbers, that probably only buys a quarter to a half billion doses.

AZ probably don't have enough manufacturing capacity to handle Europe and the USA in 2021. SII have license for 1 billion doses by themselves (and will probably ultimately be licensed for a further 2 billion) Just the first billion doses will massively exceed what AZ can produce next year.

It would seem that countries like Australia and New Zealand have leveraged their
"special relationship" with the USA to get a favourable position in the queue. Perhaps its a reward for being loyal allies in the many wars in oil rich countries around the world. I note with interest that besides Libya the "Coalition of the willing" don't seem to interested in helping Africa with its Islamic terrorism problem. Surely you could send some of your elite SAS peacekeepers to come and "practice" on the poor Africans like they did the Afghans. Plenty of africans with prosthetic legs, so good source of memorabilia and drinking vessels.

Don't you think I have a right to be angry that the two major vaccine manufacturers have "no vaccine for Africa on 2021" while the Western countries have first dibs on it.
I am sorry for my trolling but right now but if we don't get to herd immunity soon we're properly fucked. I just think the ethics of the drug companies and the political clout of the rich countries and their lackeys mean they will control and profit from a life saving drug while Africans die.

I would expect a response based on a common humanity, ie distribute the vaccine to the worlds population based on their vulnerability.
Of course we ordered the vaccine, I think however we lacked the political clout and connections to secure the deal.

We're at the end of our second wave with an infection rate of 3%
96,000 total cases, 79,000 recoveries, 1,600 deaths.
We still have much bigger threats from things like Malaria, floods, HIV, TB. To be fair to our useless and corrupt government, they have generally handled it quite well by educating the population and telling them to take responsibility from their own behavior.
Our neighbour Tanzania deny its existence and stopped testing back in April. From people I know who live there, apparently life has gone on quite normally and hospitals are functioning. Weird.

As both vaccines require two doses to be effective, New Zealand now has access to enough jabs to inoculate its entire 5.5m population several times over.

Actually I am fucking seething. Seems like after vaccinating their entire population and the Pacific Islands NZ will have over 7 million courses left.

Let's take a look at the AZ vaccine to start with shall we? Developed in the UK with over £90 million of government money, and a committed order for 100 million doses in May. Partnered with AZ specifically on the basis that they would sell at cost and partner with major producers globally to ensure a cheap global supply would be available. Especially given that their production abilities are relatively limited. Out of the first 1 billion doses that SII are producing, half are destined for COVAX.
I can guarantee that you weren't trying to order that vaccine in May - at the time Hancock was making the announcements about that investment and order a lot of people were questioning just how premature that decision was.
Either way, we secured enough for ourselves (a relative drop in the ocean compared to global requirements) then licensed to one of the world's largest vaccine manuacturers, and ensured that half of their production would go into the general worldwide supply for equitable distribution.

So how did NZ manage to book theirs. Are they part of the UK?
There's other local licensing deals and small scale AZ facilities globally to provide further local production, but frankly it's chickenfeed compared to what's going into COVAX via SII. However it may all be completely irrelevant - AZ are yet to even submit my data to Medsafe so it's probably at least 3 months before it's even approved, and there's no real idea when it might be delivered after that - if AZ experience similar troubles to what's happened over here then it might not get delivered next year at all. Currently AZ are 30 million doses behind the original plan in the UK

As both vaccines require two doses to be effective, New Zealand now has access to enough jabs to inoculate its entire 5.5m population several times over.

Actually I am fucking seething. Seems like after vaccinating their entire population and the Pacific Islands NZ will have over 7 million courses left.
Yeah, we ordered more than we need - that's good management. It means that if one doesn't have an acceptable efficacy rate, we can turn to others.
There is no way we will keep buying these after the population has been covered (less the idiots who won't accept a jab). I have no doubt the surplus will be snapped up by other countries. I wonder if your government will have set up a distribution network by then.

In my state they plan to start with the second tier of patients after the nurses etc and the really high risk within the next couple of weeks. This is for the over 65s which includes me.

Mrs Saint expecting dose 1 in the next couple of weeks. They're using NHS Nurses to mop up un-used Pfizer at the end of each day (due to no-shows, excess vaccine in vials, people disqualifying due to previously unannounced medical conditions etc)
Quite impressed withe the foresight TBH

We would be most grateful Enzedder. Hopefully we don't lose too many more to the illness before you deign to share with us.

And bro, trust me it'a not hate. As of 28 Dec, 73 teachers in the Western Cape have died including 1 at my daughters school. So its desperation if anything. Wouldn't you be feeling the same way if your parents were at such huge risk and told that they were unlikely to be vaccinated until 2022. Don't know where you live YMX but you don't seem to have the same perspective on this that I do.
Not in NZ.
We have about 500 new cases out of 100k pop each week in my area. About half some other places where over 1% are getting it every week.
My daughter is about to go back to school, where about 20% of the school was off just before the Christmas break.
My good mate has just had COVID quite badly, but looks like he’s pulling through. It’s closing in.
I’m living it.
