The idea that the EU will refund the US contribution to Ukraine is possibly the most batshit thing on there. And that's a high bar.

This is what really gets me, seeing rural voters blindly follow people who don't help them. I'm from a very working class rural region of Canada that's voted Conservative almost every provincial election (bar two, I think) since WWII. They currently prop up a Conservative provincial gov't that's done next to nothing for them and will blame Federal Liberals for things that aren't entirely in their control while not holding local politicians to account / demanding more.

Wow. Suck into the propaganda more.
Ah. You seem to be missing the point. I’m discussing the reality of what happened. Not some smug ivory tower attitude that’s had its time. Unless people wake up to the idea that the voting patterns have moved the great unwashed will continue to dominate politics while the hand wringers ask for time off to deal with it all.
No, you’re taking an ideological viewpoint and forcing it on to a situation to try to back yourself up.
No. I'm not. I'm pointing out that something that is obvious as the day is long. You can see it here and over at the other place with all the hindsight comments. I'm not saying I know what the solution is. But I can sure as heck state what the problem is. An issue which is as old as the human race - here is the adage of people trying to solve a problem with the same thinking as got them into the problem.

And people need to wake the feck up. Because we better believe what has just happened in the US isn't going to be limited to the US if we carry blythely along the same path.

My friend, you are absolutely 100% being a hand wringer over this.

There is nothing out of the ordinary about heavily invested young people taking a loss badly. It's part of being young.
I see where you're coming from. But if you'll excuse the directness, you need to go have a look in a mirror at your statement. This a prime example of the complete loss of perspective that has overtaken the western nations.

This say versus an orphaned student in Malawai who is grateful just to have somebody zoom into to talk English to them for an hour.

These are the next generation of the ruthless lawyers and tough corporates. And they can't handle a little voting dissappointment?

The poor dears are 'invested'. FFS. They're invested alright - siting in classes that are worth $100,000s a pop.

Then you wonder why some redneck farming lad who has just had his livelyhood wiped out in a hailstorm feels impelled to vote any idiot into power who isn't a hand wringer.

It's not just that Niegs but the tarrifs force the sourcing of alternative supply. Once that starts it doesn't stop. They're killing the trade route to the very market you've put your farms in to feed. It's mind bogglingly stupid. You've only got two choices in an trade imbalance - either block the source which is historically shown never to work. Or push stuff the other way. And the US is now on a path where to spite their face they're now cutting off their nose.

You're being really weird about this, particularly given the absolute meltdown and attempted coup that came from the right wing after the previous election loss. Besides, this isn't even the first time! The same thing happened in 2019 and no one cared! It's just stupid shit to complain about and to draw wildly overblown conclusions from!

Please, be serious.

I disagree with that. Politely disagree. I think there is a case to get concerned and involved with what just went on in the US. There really shouldn't be any way in a properly functioning democracy for a Trump to return to power after his actions, the political issues, and his patently obvious lack of competency. I think the reasons he succeeded are important to understand and the global trends in all Western democracies towards this dichotomy of views in the populace acknowledged.

Yeah, I'd politely agree that you're being quite weird.

The day after a convicted rapist wins the presidency, these were seen at the Texas State University (I hope they are fake).

I don't think they are fake

Edit - they're not, given the president of Texas State University has made a public statement condemning them.

The chap in the middle with the beard and his back to the camera has a t-shirt with the slogan 'Biblical Death' across the back. that's either a brave choice for a band name in Texas, or what I might have thought would be a tough sell at the stall during freshers week

My brother lives in a tiny village in Vermont. He went over to central London for the summer and was shocked how cheap things were. IIRC he claimed groceries and eating out was half the price what he pays back in the US.
Food in the UK is very cheap. Certainly cheaper than Western Europe. It's more expensive than it was a few years ago, but is still good value in comparison.
The British supermarket industry is astonishingly efficient, it is noticeable wherever you go that supermarket shops are more expensive overseas
Actually the main British supermarkets are just bigger robbing bastards than the ones in other Counties; just ask British Farmers & suppliers !

Because that 'rage bait' that you called it, the 'propoganda' that Biffer called, is actually how the 'other side' sees the reality. That post was only reflecting the comments of people on, in this instance, the Republican side of the arguement. And people who sit there casually dismissing the issues of what is in the US's case a viewpoint held by over 50% of the population are going to continue to be sadly disappointed in the direction politics keeps going.

There is zero overlap between some students getting a day off and the issues surrounding why Trump won (and why the big story is the sheer number of lost votes for the dems, given trump's vote doesn't seem to have increased much from last time out). Perhaps I'm just being dim but this just seems like a completely unrelated nothing story for people to apply their own priors to that bears no relevance or importance to the election or the general voting public on either side. It's the emptiest of empty stories.

91. People convicted of selling drugs will receive the death penalty.

92. Pardon convicted drug trafficker Ross Ulbricht (promise to Libertarian Party).

Commute rather than pardon but I'll give them this, they have a sense of humour.

And so it begins

GOP will have a substantial majority in the Senate but Trump is demanding that any incoming senate majority leader basically agrees to forgo the chamber’s confirmation powers, so he can appoint whoever he likes for two year slots without the consent of senators.

It would in truth be no bad thing if an awful lot of roles were not subject to Senate approval. Perhaps the Senate should keep its present power, but they do take far too long, and they've added so many roles it's at least somewhat absurd. That said scrapping all Senate approvals also on the face of it seems daft, for any administration and not just one centred around fantasy and corruption

Meanwhile in Australia future Fuhrer Dutton is trying out Trump tactics, he needn't bother as the sheep will be voting him in regardless. Inflation and cost of living being completely Labor's fault of course. Waiting for him to decide they are eating the cats and dogs in the Gong!

Trump Jnr. banging on about Zelensky is about to lose his "allowance". Trying to think who is likely the worst of the lot. At least Trump earned his tripe stripes by doing something.

Read some serving officers/veterans in a reddit thread (I think) talking about this and they all said their first duty is to the Constitution, not the President. I'd like to think someone would have a word before anything truly dictatorial were handed down, or that even a yes-man would flat out refuse to do something like Kent State.

... and he's campaigned on being the President of Peace, so what would he even have them do? :???:

I guess it’s in my nature to give folk a chance and I hoped that for all his campaign bluster he would be a bit more moderate and sensible in power. Also hoped he would be true to form and shaft everyone who helped him. But, no, this is a bit of a nightmare unfolding.

The obvious question is: aren't there rules and regulations in place governing blatant and obvious conflicts of interest?

Even if there are, Trumps previous administration and his previous statements mean they’ll ride over them and carry on regardless. If it’s turns out to be criminal, Trump will pardon everyone and tell them to continue.
