Wear one, don't wear one.personally I don't really give a shit but either way keep your teeth together and dont try and justify your poisition to me because I dont need to hear the associated bullshit that goes with either position.
AND incase anybody wants to challenge this position I think I have earned it ... I've served in 4 warzones and even as a dirty civvie stood at a dozen repatriations flights taken a body home. I've also stood side by side with the Veterans for Peace folk after I've marched at the Cenotaph to support them in paying their respects (and had a few drinks with them at places like the Moon Under the Water.
Any issues with this then feel free to challenge it but this year I will be up some fell in the lakes so if you can make it to the Hawkshead Brewery in Staveley on the 10th or 11th of November then I will happily sit there and discuss it, as long as the wife is the sole judge of when I'm talking through my arsev

My biggest issue with it is the piety and attempts to coerce conformity that surrounds it. A close second is the amount of waste plastic, although there's apparently a new, all paper version of the poppy this year, so thankfully that gripe should be a thing of the past.

The appeal is 21 days upto either the 11th of November or Rememberence Sunday, which ever is later.
FWIW. personally I despise the forced Poppy Facism that exists on certain broadcasters chanells, it should always be personal choice FFS they had the ficking Cookie Monster wearing one on some crappy BBC programme without doing a simple acknowledegement piece (this is annoying because I spend most of my current job reinforcing to customers why something is being done, that shit is symbolic without a discussion around the symbolism)
Someone made the point that remembrance was for the wartime generation and should be allowed to pass gradually into history which I think is not entirely unfair.
But seeing the symbols and chants of islamic extremism freely paraded through London makes me hesitate to make any concessions to modernity.

Don't blame me for the waste plastic, I wear two enamel pins (mainly because because I'm a typically cheap jock (even when I was in the Army I had the same poppy for most of my 20 years, just iron it and stick it back behind the capbadge )sockwithaticket wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2023 9:34 pm My biggest issue with it is the piety and attempts to coerce conformity that surrounds it. However I do agree with the first sentance, if you want to display one then great, if you dont but stick a pound in the tin then great and thank you. If you want to do neither then great and thank you for making a decision based on reason or conscience, especially if you allow those around you to make their decisions using the same reasoning without villifying them for it. I hate the Poppy Facism that has sprung up in the last 15 years or so.
IMO if everyone took a "you do you and I'll do me" philosophy then we should be a lot more free to express our own opinions without fear or prejudice.
FFS, if I want to get snotty about this, its why I volunterially put my neck on line for 20 odd years, to allow people to use their freedoms, regardless of the fact I, or even the general public agree with their opinions.

It seems to be and the worst thing is from my POV, its done because broadcasting companies are more firghtened of potential backlash than of allowing freedom of expression from the individual.
To my mind the BBC are overtly Orwellian in their imposition of Thoughtcrime against those who don't want to wear a poppy on their programmes
Well said. Maybe folk could try not being cunts in front of their TV’sFalconJock wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2023 9:29 pmWear one, don't wear one.personally I don't really give a shit but either way keep your teeth together and dont try and justify your poisition to me because I dont need to hear the associated bullshit that goes with either position.

I appreciate as a Paddy our opinion isn't always welcome, but hey, our shared history is what it is.FalconJock wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2023 9:59 pmDon't blame me for the waste plastic, I wear two enamel pins (mainly because because I'm a typically cheap jock (even when I was in the Army I had the same poppy for most of my 20 years, just iron it and stick it back behind the capbadge )sockwithaticket wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2023 9:34 pm My biggest issue with it is the piety and attempts to coerce conformity that surrounds it. The bit that primarily pisses me off with the way UK Politicians adore the Poppy, & the performative art from politicians in the US; is the way they simultaneously pretend to be absolutely, 100% behind our/their brave service men/women, & at the same time regularly fuck them over, by leaving it up to a Charity, or grossly underfunded public operations to provide the services they require.
Why the fuck does the British Legion exist ?, & does anything more than provide a place for veterans to meet & get pissed together & have a laugh ?
At least the VA does work to improve the lives of veterans who've been injured in combat; but the commitment to it has ebbed & flowed between administrations, & I know vets who've been completely missed by them, & fuck knows, it isn't rocket science to know that you need to have major mental health resources in place for veterans after every major deployment. I mean it's over a century since the end of WW I, & even back then they understood that !

My neighbour, Mr George Fox (was in the service forever, and the TAs) used to always collect for the British Legion. Used to stand in Ebbw Vale in full uniform at this time. He looked magnificent. Miss you George. Quiet humble, dignified man.
Sometimes it is all about just sheer respect for another bloke. I get one for George.

Just turned on Talk TV and the presenter was apologising and thanking viewers who pointed out he was not wearing a poppy.
It had apparently fallen off a few minutes earlier.
He propmptly leant down picked the poppy up of the floor and put it back on apologising and then 5 minutes of why everyone should wear a poppy and what an excellent job the Brirish Legion does.
Fucking surreal.
I personally have worn a poppy in the past and have no issue with people weaing them but the media outlets are pushing the wearing to a new level.

The whole "have to wear" is just 100 % wrong.
As a youngster I was a Scout, did a couple of Remembrance day parades, did Poppy sales in my local area for a while (also did the RNLI)
I have bought a Poppy every year that I am in the UK, don't always wear one.
Both of my Grandfathers were in the Forces in WW1, my paternal Grandfather was 17th AIF , wounded in action in 1917. A first Cousin of my other Grandfather was RFC and was shot down and died. Visited his grave in France 2019.

There's absolutely no 'you have to wear one' in British society at large, it's just some people sending abuse on social media which makes the tv channels shit themselves. So both sides are nearly entirely confected. No one is making you wear one and no one is sending you to prison for wearing one either (unless there's more tv personalities on this bored than I realised). Walk down any high street and more people won't be wearing one than will.
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot, But he'll remember with advantages, What feats he did that day
This is the point of the thread.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Sun Oct 29, 2023 6:40 pm There's absolutely no 'you have to wear one' in British society at large, it's just some people sending abuse on social media which makes the tv channels shit themselves. Why the fuck are the media pushing this agenda.
FFS puppets wearing poppies perfectly exemplifies my point.
Ridiculous

Certain sections of Britain wants itbto be a militarised state. Kids sent to national service, former soldiers given priority over everyone, in the NHS, no matter the medical needs or medical urgency, and given priority in housing and welfare....again no matter the need or priority. They also want Britain to be anti gay anti trans, anti equality. I follow lots of former RAF pilots who are fucking enraged by this stuff.
They think if you can carry a big fucking sword at a coronation, you have the right stuff to lead Britain.
Of course poppies are part of the culture war.
Everything fucking is.

Poppies, the Legion and Help for Heroes in the round always struck me as something that shouldn't be necessary but quite deplorably is.
I've always thought that it's a case of 'you broke it, you fix it' - if we as a nation send young lads and lasses into harm's way, we've a duty to pick the pieces up afterwards. Whether we, as individuals, agree with the conflict or not. We generally fail to do this - witness levels of homelessness amongst ex-servicepeople, for example.
I'll always wear a poppy and put a few quid in the tin, but if anything the poppy should reinforce a pacifist mindset. Whenever we fight a war, young people come home missing body parts. The poppy should never, ever glamourise war.

The best bit of Poppy Rage season for me is the Irish sportsmen plying their trades in the UK and then doing something "brave" during a minutes silence or whatever. They are applauded by their countrymen who seem quite willing to forget that the aforementioned sportsmen are paying 40% of their wages into the King's Revenue. I enjoy it!
Wear one, don't wear one, who gives a fuck. Me? I'll be attending my small village's "parade" (150m walk) to the Cenotaph - The village was a Hamlet during the First World war and there are 37 names on the Cenotaph - you'd better believe I'm going to remember those guys - and then I'm going to the village church for a short service.
I do this because I think it's the right thing to do, I honestly do not care, do not judge, do not blink an eye if you don't.
Will they get smaller every year? Probably, but I'll go for as long as I'm able.

“Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true.”

The point Newsthump is making is somewhere waaaaaaaay over there if you are looking for it ------->
It's certainly not where you're at.
As well as thinking of service personnel in a broader sense on a personal level I'll be thinking of Sean Binnie, Robert McLaren, Kev Elliot, Gus Miller, Tam Mason and Craig Hopson (RA attached to us) killed on HERRICK 10. As well as Aaron Black, Iain Bruce and I believe a 1 SCOTS lad, also attached to us, who all deployed on at least HERRICK 10 and have taken their own lives.
