Disgruntled ex member campaigned for it?

The most interesting to me is Jake's disappearance after mentioning the demise. No more details or update. I reckon he threw a tantrum at management and PR was collateral damage.

It's serving over http and https, you just have to add the s. Ideally http would redirect to https, most browsers are issuing pretty strict warnings about http sites now-a-days.

The cert is a valid Let's Encrypt one, so the site is as trustworthy as ASMO is (and his hosting provider).

I think people got tired of being treated like irritating children by the administrators of an amateurish, 2000-era website.

Thankfully one of the more tech-savvy parishioners set up a superior alternative.
