Re Tiger Woods, as much as he dominated the sport, I'm not sure he had the same calibre of competition as Jack Nicklaus, and Nicklaus still holds the record for majors.
There is the famous anecdote from Arnold Palmer who said of a young Nicklaus, "He plays a game with which I'm not familiar"
Nicklaus recreated the quote for Woods, but Majors are the benchmark, Woods didn't have to beat Gary Player, Palmer and an up and coming Tom Watson and Seve etc

The first international match I went to was Scotland versus Graham Mourie's All Blacks in 1978, when I was a school boy.
You've had some great backrow players since then, some of the best of their generations.
Jerry Collins was one of my favourites, but McCaw was the best player, ever.

I'm Messi over Ronaldo for football.
Nadal for tennis. Federer is sublime and Djokovic is an absolute phenom but Nadal is a mix of the two and would be way ahead of both if his knees and ankles weren't made of play-doh.

I err slightly on the side of Ronaldo in football because he played in more leagues and I think he is more versatile and well rounded - clearly better in the air. However, I think its perfectly reasonable to put Messi above him. Or Pele or Maradona for that matter.
I would go with Dan Carter over McCaw in rugby because I think as a general rule a flyhalf exerts more influence over a game than an openside and because Carter was a really complete player and very good in pressure situations. His drop goal in the 2015 RWC final just exemplifies his greatness in my opinion.

Gary Player was a very fit golfer and understood that he needed to do work in the gym to make him a better golfer but Woods took it to a whole other level. Look at videos of Nicklaus and Palmer when they were in their early 20s and it's likely both will have a cigarette hanging out of their mouth and Nicklaus was noticibly chubby. Tiger wasn't just a golfer, he was also an athlete and one of the greatest if not the greatest pressure putters there's ever been despite most people associating power with him.

It's always difficult to compare across eras, when Nicklaus was playing it was at a time when it was commonplace for other sports stars, especially footballers, to spend their afternoon in the pub and at the bookies. Footballers are a completely different shape now. Alex Ferguson and then Arsene Wenger are credited with bringing about a culture change in the English game, it was always going to happen, sports science was expedited in the NFL, it was only a matter of time before football looked at what was happening there regarding diet, training, recovery, sports psychology etc.
I genuinely don't think Woods had the same competition, however there is one benchmark that we can look to and that is majors, these are the ones the players want, for that reason I still think Nicklaus is the GOAT, so far.
