Friday 16 July 15:00.
185 Pick'nPay trucks left in a 3.4 km convoy from JHB today to take emergency food supplies down to PMB and DBN. Staff have worked through the entire Thursday night packing these additional trucks that were routed for elsewhere in the country.
Saturday update:
Trucks arrived 23:00 last night and we opened store 06:00. It normally takes 3 days to pack a hyper. With help from the community, we did it in 7 hours.
When the 185 trucks left JHB at 15:00 we sent our drone up and all the drivers came to work dressed in the colours of the SA flag and stood in a circle together praying for each another and their safety on the road tonight. First time ever. Was quite moving.

People are angry. KZN has a large, young population with a very bleak future. It was never going to take much to spark anger in this demographic, and it won't be the last time I'm sure.

I agree about the battle within the ANC, but for the time being that battle is within the confines of Luthuli House and other state buildings. I haven't seen anything to indicate that Zuma has the loyalty of the police and army, and that they would be willing to take to the streets.

Agree with Rinkhals here. I believe the KZN mafia and its allies around the country are hurting from having the easy corruption money tap turned off to some extent. They've maintained power through bribery and access to tenders etc. They know that they have influence as long as they can pay off those that directly control their base. ie trade union chiefs, local indunas and warlords.

So while there was plenty fuel on the ground with Covid related suffering and dissatisfaction with service delivery and so forth, the ignition came from bad actors whose intention was to remove Ramaphosa and other obstacles to their control of the economy. It may well have backfired for them. The rest of the country is so horrified that they'll see Ramaphosa as a stable leader and support him. I have been a DA voter since inception but would seriously consider voting ANC if Ramaphosa held power going into the next election.
