Is this fan racist ?
It's literally the English national flag. It's present on sporting strips. It's flown in a variety of situations by a variety of people, official or otherwise. It is not a symbol of racism. What it can signify is that the people who have it on their vans or their windows or on their fucking Twitter accounts, is that they're often ultra-nationalist and possibly/probably racist. But it is not a 'racist flag'. The English flag isn't used primarily to attack people. The English flag is not the Confederate flag, which I note has recently started to be banned in the US, and it's not the swastika, which is banned in Germany. It's the current national flag.Torquemada 1420 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 3:49 pmOh. So a symbol that is routinely seen by minorities as a mark of a threat (with ample justification) is off bounds. So no, I didn't think you were serious when you decided to equate the flag being popular with racists, with the fact that "Paki" is overwhelmingly known and used throughout the country as a racial epithet aimed at Pakistanis, Indians, Sri Lankans, etc - and very little else. If you can't understand that, then you're nowhere near as smart as you so obviously believe you are.
Noted on the depression comment. It's still weird to bring it up out of the blue. Between that and Yeeb convincing himself that he's getting laid more than me, the weird personal nature of this is a little unsettling.

To me it's not clear who'd being disrespected in the joke, those with a name some find harder to pronounce, or those who struggle with the pronunciation. I've already said I've no issue with Nadolo calling it out, we should be exposed to different thoughts. Some will react in isolation and/or as part of a wider experience that it is offensive, some will think it a joke, some will think it's a funny joke, and lord knows what other reactions there'll be, my initial reaction was the pressure's now on for the stadium announcer at TigersUncle fester wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 3:09 pmSure I mangle enough names myself but that's different to making fun of or being disrespectful of somebody's name on a public forum.Rhubarb & Custard wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 2:54 pmHave you never chortled at or commented on people like Jiffy mangling names of the players? Jiffy himself will from time to time have heard people come nowhere close to Welsh pronunciations and heard many jokes about his language. People do make jokes, sometimes inappropriately. Whether this was flat out racism or a joke which has badly missed the mark for some I don't know, but I can live with the idea it wasn't intended with malice whilst others reasonably make the point given a wider context the phrasing causes concernUncle fester wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 11:51 am It's the kind of "joke" your gran would be amused by.
Therefore it's "light racism" at the very least.
It's not a major biggie but Nadolo is within his rights to point out that it's not on.

I seem to have lots of security guards and cops taking a real interest in me, mainly because I look like king of the hippies, and particularly when it is sunny out and I wear my usual shorts, sandals and Frank Zappa taking a shit t'shirt.
When a security gaurd follows me and if I notice, I stop, look at them , they usually then walk away and then I start following them.
They really hate it.
The huge shit eating grin I get when I walk past their bank of monitors, like "yes my lad we were watching you" is quite disconcerting.
When I cross the border into England I usually get passively aggressively sorry'ied to death.

Was just a jibe at how angry you are all the time, and how often on here. The only person as angry as you that we knew was nicknamed ‘Virge’ because he hadn’t had a bird in so long, once he did actually meet someone (when he was about 38 or something daft) he settled down mentally a lot.
I didn’t know you were depressed or had issues in that area, but I’d probably always take the piss out of someone’s buster gonads , than their mental health.
I will refrain from taken the mick out of your nutsack in future , or anything else remotely personal - hope that helps.

No I don’t have him on ignore as some of his rugby and IT / gaming intel is very good. He’s basically a nice chap when not on his high horse about something, which unfortunately is nearly all the time.

...it was always accusing me of some shit. or doing laughing emoticons at me.
It just seemed way to sociopathic and dehumanising an a experience, of an evening, to chat with it.
I really didn't get the "nice" bit at all.
But hey ho, if you are a fan of English rugby, right or wrong..I guess I can see the attraction in JM.
Tbf is wasn’t only English claiming you were a mooch and on drugs - in fact, iirc some of your biggest detractors, were welsh. Interesting you mention sociopath, it’s been mentioned before - even at me when I did that David Cameron ‘Refry, get a fucking job’ conservative poster meme.Line6 HXFX wrote: ↑Sun Aug 02, 2020 10:41 amCan't remember if it was accusing me of asking people on PR for money or accusing me of being on drugs when I put it on ignore.Yeeb wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2020 8:43 amFfs you are a funny, weird bastard and no mistake.Line6 HXFX wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 11:02 am

It has been another long and exhausting day, not really sure I have the patience for this, or to find out exactly I am being accused of today.

Isn't it casual racism to ask someone how to pronounce their name?Nols wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 7:41 am Casual racism, rooted in cultural ignorance. Not an overt racist (based on that comment alone).
Being ignorant of pronunciations from other languages and cultures isn't a bad thing, we can't all know everything. Suggesting that the club should sign players based on your own narrow perspectives and familiarity is, though. Ask how to pronounce the names, don't mock. It's not difficult.
Or is it more being extremely polite and respectul to ensure you get the pronounciation right?MSG# wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 2:38 pmIsn't it casual racism to ask someone how to pronounce their name?Nols wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 7:41 am Casual racism, rooted in cultural ignorance. After your impassioned pleas about dehumanising behaviour, I’m sure you will have some convincing explanation as to why it’s okay to refer to people as “it”.Line6 HXFX wrote: ↑Sun Aug 02, 2020 10:41 amCan't remember if it was accusing me of asking people on PR for money or accusing me of being on drugs when I put it on ignore.Yeeb wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2020 8:43 amFfs you are a funny, weird bastard and no mistake.Line6 HXFX wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 11:02 am

One of my major, major pet peeves is people deliberately mispronouncing foreign names. Called our scorer out for this a couple of weeks ago at the cricket club for pretending he couldn't spell 'Alam'. If you're not sure, ask. Some sympathy when it's particularly long or from a language that doesn't work to an English tongue but the vast majority are choosing to mispronounce.
Can always remember a bloke at the Rec chewing my ear off about 'Marrie Itarjay'. Pathetic stuff.
