The Springboks vs British & Irish Lions 3rd Test Thread
He didn't catch his high balls though - he had one in 1st half and fielded a kick in 2nd when calling for a mark. Not sure what the 'good intensity' is that he brought to the game - that's usually a phrase used when you can't find anything else to point out he did well!I like neeps wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 6:56 pmHe actually played quite well apart from the two mistakes which err probably lost the game.dpedin wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 6:55 pmIt was a walk in for Adams, schoolboy error from Williams who was rank awful today. TBF he has been pretty awful whole Tour and by playing him the Lions gained nothing over Hogg but lost an attacking and kicking threat instead. Should never have been selected.

He was all over the pitch. His intensity in the kick chase won the penalty that Curry butchered for example.dpedin wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 7:00 pmHe didn't catch his high balls though - he had one in 1st half and fielded a kick in 2nd when calling for a mark. It was tongue in cheek his mistakes directly and obviously lost the series for the Lions. But if you ignore those mistakes he did actually play quite well.
Wind it in lad. Not the time for my guy is better than your guy.dpedin wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 6:55 pmIt was a walk in for Adams, schoolboy error from Williams who was rank awful today. What a thriller. A draw would probably have been appropriate at the end. But happy to take the win. Could have gone either way today. Thumb up to Raynal, was really good and handled the game well. Except for all the off field bullshit, I have to say I enjoyed the 3 tests. Proud of the boks, against many odd we managed to turn the series around an win it.
The truth is that Hogg had to be dropped after last week. Williams was OK apart from the pass but that was a bloody awful mistake- a bit much to blame the result on that though, we should have been out of sight by half time.
As I said earlier, the irony is that Hogg, particularly with Price and Finn firing, would probably have been brilliant in that match.
The annoying one for me is Curry. He has been absolutely average pre tests and both the first 2 tests. I genuinely think Mish would have made a difference today as that SA back row wasn’t up to much either
All the money you made will never buy back your soul
That post above reminded me, bloody well done to the ref, thought he was outstanding today.
Of course there are a few decisions you could argue, but given the bullshit around it he was his own man and had a blinder IMO

Meh, we got accused of the same thing when Jake White was coach. Kind of par for the course really.Kawazaki wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 6:53 pmBlake wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 6:48 pm Am I correct in saying all the Boks’ tries were scored by backs, and all the Lions’ tries were scored by forwards from mauls?
The Bok defensive structure really is a tough nut to crack. Hope we get to see NZ, Australia and the Pumas have a go at it to see if it holds up.
I think South Africa are killing rugby to be honest. Dreadful to watch and awful to play.
No class off the pitch either.
We are playing to our strengths and using what we believe are the best tactics available given the constraints of the laws.
Don’t like it? Beat us with better tactics.
Curry ahead of Watson has been shocking. Curry is a flat track bully who disappears when the going gets tough. He is used to playing with the Sale /SA B pack or with an England front 5 that is usually on the front foot. Like Ben Youngs when he finds himself on the back foot ge is hopeless. Contract with Nish …dpedin wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 6:16 pm Lions pack got mullered in 2nd half, feckin hopeless. Sinkler and Vunipola can't scrummage. Wynn Jones shoved off a couple of scrums. AWJ is past it and Curry was abysmal. Too many penalties conceded by the pack in the last 20. Couldn't win ball or clean ball for Finn to do his magic. Can't understand why we end up with 7 English guys in the Lions pack when they got beaten up by Wales, Ireland and Scotland in the 6Ns? No ball then no win. Adams anonymous all game and Williams only caught 1 ball all night, squandered a try scoring overlap and attempted the weakest tackle all game to let Kolbe in to score. Slightly more entertaining game than last week.

I think the Lions team have been great to play. Honest but limited. The coaches are both assholes. Boks didn't cover themselves in glory and a drawn series would have been a fair result. However, it feels good to be the World Champions, current no.1 ranked Test team and to have beaten the BIL again. How is your team doing? And how many Saffers play for the club you support?Kawazaki wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 6:53 pmBlake wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 6:48 pm Am I correct in saying all the Boks’ tries were scored by backs, and all the Lions’ tries were scored by forwards from mauls?

I'd like to repeat my congratulations to the Boks.
and to distance myself from any dung throwing, they are worthy world champions and now conquerors of the Lions, that must feel pretty good, so pour yourselves a large one and enjoy it - Slàinte mhath.
The post that said something along the lines of "suck it up and find a way to beat us" is dead right.
Scotland host South Africa in November, I'd wager our backline can have a decent crack at them, I'm just not sure we'll get enough ball to do so.

At Gatland.
IMO that’s two series in a row that the Lions should have won, but didn’t because of his limited gameplay and the ‘don’t lose’ mentality limiting the best players in B&I to playing basic rugby.
I hope he fucks off now and never darkens our doors again.
And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?
Aye, that was a cheeky wee moment at the end when he tried to charge the penalty given they had to tap it first. Two of them laughing about it immediately.

That penalty he kicked for touch right after he came on. It was from about the half way line or even inside the Lions half and he thumped it 1m in front of the bok goalline into touch, as if he never does it any differentlyBiffer wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 8:53 pmSpeaking as a Scot, he is. Gatland has been a thorn in our sides for years now, but he really made some weird selections for this tour. I really hope that was his last Lions gig.Biffer wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 8:47 pmWell, I’m going to throw some.Tichtheid wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 8:16 pm I'd like to repeat my congratulations to the Boks.

Kolosi played brilliantly considering the shit he was getting coming into the series. Don’t agree with his “disrespect” stuff but a hell of a player and a hell of a manOomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 8:55 pm It's bevok to be Bok supporter. Kolisi we stand by you

The dung-throwing I don't like is disrespecting your opponent and saying they are boring or whatever just after a match, that is not part of rugby football.
It was a strange tour. A tour of South Africa that started in Scotland against Japan, played in empty stadiums, two matches against the Sharks in neutral venues, an SA A team that was nearly a Bok side and all test matches played in Cape Town on a soccer pitch.
The final 15-20 minutes was as tense as I've been through. Before the match the Bok game plan to me seemed to be kick like they had been, try and get set piece dominance, then gradually open up holding more possession. The Lions blew all that apart. The Boks hanged on thankfully, huge effort to emerge from that 1st half only 4 points down.
Gatland's strategy and selections are going to be high up the list of reasons the LIons lost, especially after Finn Russell's performance. It never seemed necessary to have a massive physical side kicking everything to win. Gatland's post match interview where he admitted Russell played well but noted he knocked on, and made other snipes at players (Williams not passing to Adams) was a bit of a downer. I would be surprised if we see Gatland coaching a tier one test side again any time soon.
An exhausting set of matches to watch, glad it only comes around every 12 years for us.

I think he just didn't know how to break down our defence
And he still doesn't lol
Its ne thing to break our line but thats almost something we are willing to risk because we back ourselves to turn it over eventually
Finn played for most of the match, played well, they ran the ball plenty.... and zero tries to show for it in the backs
It was all about discipline and giving away penalties! Curry fecks up when Lions had rolling maul towards SA try line, Courtney Lawes not rolling away to concede SA match winning penalty, Sinkler scrummaging with knee on the ground when Lions were on SA 5m line, Vunipola collapsing in last scrum of the game. Anyone see a pattern here?Cartman wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 10:29 pmYeah that was bad_Os_ wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 10:07 pm It was a strange tour.
