Great win - well done Ireland. Had to turn over after 15 overs of the reply. Paul Stirling loves playing England, eh?

Unimpressed with what I saw of Tom Curran with the ball, and we just have too many batsmen throwing wickets away at the moment, but I didn't think Ireland would be able to chase it down, let alone with 7 wickets in hand.

Funny comment on Cricinfo with around 7 overs to go - English batting depth is great, but the bowling depth isn't there. That may or may not be true, but the bats significantly underperformed today which left the bowlers with a lot to do

That was one hell of a match, well done Ireland. Ridiculous they don't have another match for months.

England-Pakistan series starts today - and (finally) front foot no balls will be adjudicated by the TV umpire.

Long overdue

Thanks for the reminder - turn on Sky Go to be faced with Shane Warne saying how much he loves Jos Buttler as a Test batsman - "he can take the game away from you" - and Ian Ward saying his keeping has been fantastic with no problems at all.

What have I ever done to you, Saint

Archer and Woakes the pick of the bowlers so far, both with a wicket each off great balls. Shan and Babar Azam are properly in, though, and look very good.

Buttler with his first dropped catch of the series off Bess.

Cricket is so anachronistic. They went off for rain, came back but the umpires have stopped England bowling their quicks because the light is too bad, so we have Root and Bess bowling.

Fucksake. Buttler gets nowhere near a pretty decent stumping chance. Yeah, it bounced a bit more than expected, but that was hopeless.

Between captains who don't know how to use them and coaches who keep picking crap keepers, who'd be an English spinner these days eh?

Wicket keeping has been badly neglected as a skill for the last 20 years. Nowadays it's just a case of toss the gloves to a random batsman.

Nah, we have won 3 from 3 against the plucky Scots. Last time we nearly cocked it up though - rolled them for bugger all and then stuttered in the race for quick runs and only just got home.

The very last time was cancelled due to COVD. It was one of them jokes.

They wouldn't be picked. Their batting wasn't good enough. As a former burly wicketkeeper it really makes me quite sad.

Edit - to be clear, the 'former' applies to the 'wicketkeeper' and not the 'burly'.

What's really mad is we have a quality keeper in Ben Foakes who's also a better bat than Buttler in the longer forms of the game.

Asad Shafiq gone - Pakistan looking a little vulnerable at 150-4. It's really felt like a proper Test so far in a way that the WI series didn't; high quality bowling meets high quality confident batting.

Probably, I wasn't being entirely serious. Everyone can beat everyone in ODIs and T20s.

Broad unlucky with 2 reviews, second was fair enough but I think it was bat nicking pad on the first one.

Shaping up to be an interesting match

Yeah, but he doesn’t get picked because there’s this idiot fixed idea of ‘we’ve got to pick the extra batsman, we need to get someone really destructive’. Adam Gilchrist destroyed wicket keeping as a specialism.

Alan Knott's test career average is higher than Buttler's so far plus he scored 5 test match centuries and 30 fifties. Not bad for "not good enough!"

But I guess Alex Stewart is the more modern ideal.

Knott's average isn't that far off Stewart's when Stewart was playing as a wicket keeper, either (32.7 v 34.9).

Foakes average is a fair bit higher than Buttler's in First Class cricket. And he's younger than Buttler. Scored a ton on debut in his only test match. I don't understand what the attraction of Buttler is to the selectors.

The England selectors basically hate Ben Foakes. If he asked them to meet him for a pint, they’d be busy and that would be no big deal. It’s the fact that he keeps asking them and they keep coming up with different excuses. It’s not a case of one single glaring omission. It’s a cumulative thing.

Let’s start with the very basic facts: Ben Foakes is a 26-year-old human male who has played five Test matches. When he played these matches, the main thing that happened was that everyone went, “Wow, this guy’s really good at wicketkeeping.” He also made a fifty and a hundred and averaged 41.50 with the bat.

England were so impressed with Foakes’ Test performances that they resolved never to pick him again under any circumstances. Not even to carry the drinks.

Shan Masoon gets a well deserved century. He'll thank Jos for those two lives, I'm sure.

This piece was in my inbox - really brings home just how much work he's had to do to succeed at this level: https://wickets.substack.com/p/shan-masood-the-rebuild

Shadab out in the 40s, going to slog Bess (who's bowling nicely) and ballooning it for Root to take an easy catch. Shan Masood still there. These two really put pressure on England particularly with loads of quick singles.

Into the bowlers, Yasir Shah in now to annoy England for a while.
