SA records 2 273 new Covid cases, 25 deaths

The NICD said 84% of the cases accounted for yesterday (Monday) came from the Gauteng province, followed by the Western Cape which accounted for 5% of cases.


KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 3% of cases while Mpumalanga and the North West each accounted for 2% of cases respectively.

The Free State and Limpopo each accounted for 1% of the cases while the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces accounted for less than 1% of the new cases reported yesterday (Monday).

11 535 new infections yesterday. The peak of the July wave was 22000 per day and it took 10 weeks from the trough to get there. It looks like we'll reach that figure in less than 4 weeks. Deaths and hospitalisations should start to climb soon. I'm praying its milder. That would be an absolute Christmas miracle.

It just goes to show how successful those lockdown measure were at slowing down the rate of infection. I reckon we'll see some new measures kick in this week. Especially around indoor mass gatherings like church and nightclubs.

Air travel is a tiny demographic for South Africa.

They need to target trains and taxis.

Those are tricky from a practical standpoint. Air travel is low hanging fruit. You need to present ID's, there are security checkpoints. It may be a small percentage of the population but I feel it would make quite a difference to say a vaccine hesitant family if one of them was jabbed with no ill effects. A multiplier effect in other words.

The R100 Vooma voucher for over 60s seems to be working well. They should open that up to the entire population. It may seem a pittance but an extra R500 for a family of 5 for Christmas this year would be a fair motivation.

In the 60+ age cohort, 66% are fully vaccinated, and 5% are partially vaccinated. This means that 71% of all people over 60 have had at least one dose of the vaccine.
In the 50 to 59 age cohort, 57% are fully vaccinated, and 5% are partially vaccinated. This means that 62% of all people aged 50 to 59 have had at least one dose of the vaccine.
When breaking down the data for all those people over 50 who are fully vaccinated, it is apparent that the Overberg district is doing the best, followed by the Garden Route.
The Central Karoo is lagging all other districts by some margin.
The breakdown is as follows:

Overberg: 75.3%
Garden Route: 66.5%
Cape Winelands: 59.4%
West Coast: 59.1%
City of Cape Town: 58.5%
Central Karoo: 44.3%

As of 5pm on Thursday 127 315 vaccines were administered in the last 24 hours. Gauteng once more topped the list with 40665 compared with the Northern Cape that had the lowest number of vaccines administered on Thursday at 3 219.
