I read Roland White’s book about the Falklands a while ago. Chile has an island (San Felix?) out in the Pacific. There were plans to fly PR9s from there. I don’t think they materialised but there were some Nimrod flights from there.

That seems a bit odd because Chile is to the West of Argentina (obviously Falklands to the East) so, if you were going to fly from Chilean territory, you'd do it from land: all the islands bar Tierra DF are out in the Pacific so further West. I can't see how Chile allowing the RAF to operate from one of their islands would have been seen by the Argies and any different to flying out of Santiago!

The whole war was makeshift. Was talking with Dave Castle (Black Buck 6: the Rio incident) earlier in the year and he talked, amongst other comic moments, how there was no procedure to destroy the secret documents aboard the Vulcans in the event of them being captured.

Sad to report the sole Czech Hurricane was lost at an airshow on Sunday, killing the pilot.

Ah, hadn’t swiped far enough up. Saw loads of Vampires in the 50s from RAF Valley, followed by Gnats. Also some twin piston engine trainer - Varsity or Oxford?

They would have been Vickers Varsity twin-engine crew trainers. Even had a bomb aimer's position. I will admit to getting on a bit now, very nearly as old as the Canberra.

Been lucky enough to forge some relationship with XM655 at Wellesbourne so hoping to get to experience what you have. And an EGR too with luck!

Yes! Unless they can somehow wangle a transit (by air) licence out of the CAA which would permit a short hop.

Otherwise it's a complete dismantle and reassemble, hence the costs.

That is not the same thing. Museum pieces are cut and shut jobs because they are not intended to run again. In the case of the Vulcan we are talking disassembly to later reassemble in order to maintain operational capability. Just think of the complexity involved! Here is the Jetstream that went from Cranfield to (well, I can't say but it's in Scotland) and it took a couple of weeks and a very large sum of money to do:


Chop job probably 10% of the cost.
