Next step get rid of it and all the nonsense cups and trophies for matches between nations. You get a shiny thing for winning a tournament or competition, not for just for playing one game against another nation.

Can you honestly say you give a flying fuck about the Hillary shield or the Millenium trophy? I care about beating the teams with whom we're apparently contesting these cabinet ornaments, but the items themselves are a dumb gimmick.

Yep agreed. Beyond the Calcutta Cup and the Bledisloe the whole thing is so confected.

I don't care or even know the names of the cups but that doesn't mean they're a bad thing. They're for the players really and they seem to enjoy winning something tangible that can be held aloft and have the win engraved with their victory just like the little shield you may still cherish after winning the U18s Cup or whatever. But this was the same when the Calcutta Cup was introduced, you don't need a cup to play for to have a fixture but it's symbolic of that fixture and that fixture alone. After 100 years it collects gravitas and history and then people like you would complain if it was removed.

I'm not convinced the players do care all that much about most of them. Calcutta Cup or Triple Crown, sure, but none of the more recent tin pot ones. The difference between the older ones, which were obviously new at some point, is that they arose organically in the amateur era not because Dave from marketing thought adding a cup would spice up a fixture.

Great, you're not convinced the players like lifting cups after a match win. I'm happy for you.

Ditto. Its nigh on impossible to support an Eddie Jones coached side. This is the first time in my life I've been a bigger fan of the national football team than the rugby side. Jones is toxic.

When Eddie was coaching* the Reds I turned up at Reds' home games, and not to cheer for the oppo; I was not alone in this, of course.

In short, it's certainly possible; just difficult.

We're at the "meaningless management babble" stage of the Eddie Jones cycle. Again.

It's patently obvious that he has no idea what to do with the players at his disposal, and will be going back to hoping that sticking Farrell and Manu in the side solves all his problems.

My mate's out on an 8 week contract in camp with the Wallabies. Says they are looking very sharp and will be difficult to beat in their ownj backyard this time around.

Care back, Billy back (Dombrandt obviously injured), Arundell going, still not understanding the Ewels selection, same with Rodd and Schickerling but the glaring omission for me is Ben Earl, streets ahead of any of the other back row players in the squad.

No Youngs at last. Though having to select Care is a bit of an indictment to our player development at 9,

Quite indicative of where we are that after four years of experimentation we may well start with all but the same XV vs Argentina two world cups running at this rate.

On the 9s, JVP and Randall are there, and if Quirke wasn't injured he'd have been in the mix, though probably at the expense of JVP.

Furbank and Ewells in there to fulfil the "Eddie Jones is a genius who sees things other coaches don't" quotient.

They normally are hard to beat. The question for them is normally can they find sufficient talent in the tight 5 and halfbacks from such low playing numbers, outside of that the physical and rugby talent often sees them present a very stiff challenge.

And on Jones I've got a lot of respect for him and many of his methods, partly because it seems to daft to dismiss someone with his list of achievements and certainly it seems antithetical to the values of rugby to claim one has 'no resect'. I don't like a lot of his selectorial decisions nor tactical decisions, I can see why he's done as he's done at times even if I don't agree with it, and I think he'd be interesting to hear from on what he thinks are the problems in pushing beyond that because a fair amount of the problems he sees even if he's incorrect in not seeing a solution will continue to present as problems

Can only assume he is covering both 15 and 10 though in my mind he would be 3rd choice at both and not even make the bench.
As for Ewels :bimbo: :bimbo: :bimbo:
