But will the NZ Rugby board endorse it on Wednesday.. as presumably Mark Robinson has done this off his own back?
FOSTER - NOW GONE 🎉 - congrats kiwis
You have brilliantly nailed my point about players commenting in public on the coach.Dan54 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 12:01 amWould make no difference if it was Rangi's son, don't talk to people who can't keep big mouth shut! Why, players are not seemingly telling family members about coach. If Rangi or Razor had come out and said I have been offered job, I would have no problem, as you know it is something that can be spoken about, but what I say IF someone from family has leaked it they shouldn't of been told. Surely you can see the difference? No? Ok.....
I have no problem with players talking to family members about the coach, as that is a private conversation and holds no possibility of any negative consequences for the player, unless of course that family member leaks the content, in which case they are scum.Dan54 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 2:15 amWhy, players are not seemingly telling family members about coach. My issue is now and always has been players being asked to comment in the media, which is inherently meaningless as negative comments on the current coach is very likely to have direct consequences for the player.

Schmidt to be attack coach suggests that he had a quiet input into the improved backline performance at Ellis Park, just as it was Ryan who fixed the forwards.
Keeping Foster on as front man avoids having to buy him out, plus it means not having to pay Robertson and McDonald.
We win in Paris, and Foster retires in triumph.
... with NZRU crossing fingers that Robertson doesn't flee the scene in the interim.

Foster says he been working with Schmidt behind scenes since he took over job, he is quite good mates with him. And he went down the Hansen road when he got Smith back as defence coach after 2011, he got Schmidt's wife to talk him into it.convoluted wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 3:33 am Schmidt to be attack coach suggests that he had a quiet input into the improved backline performance at Ellis Park, just as it was Ryan who fixed the forwards.

Foater was actually attack coach from 2011 onwards.

If I was the RFU I’d be inviting Razor to Twickenham immediately.
Why? I thought they already had Eddie Jones until after WC?Guy Smiley wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 3:45 am If I was the RFU I’d be inviting Razor to Twickenham immediately.

Yep... NZ Rugby will again not consider anyone until after NZ have been knocked out the world cup.. only to find no one is available... Razor and anyone else decent have already been snapped up... the only one not employed? Foster again!Guy Smiley wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 3:45 am If I was the RFU I’d be inviting Razor to Twickenham immediately.
"We are confident that though NZ didn't make it out the group stage this time., Foster is the right man to get us out next time..."
Aren't Vancouver winters quite pleasant? Not too cold ? Or is it pretty wet? I just like the access to the mountains and the beautiful harbour there... though never been in winter...Snooze wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 11:31 pmAgreed.Grandpa wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 10:04 pm
You live in Vancouver? You lucky bugger... love that place.
NZ Rugby / Mark Robinson have not handled the whole soap opera well though... lets hope they do the right thing this week and put the poor guy out of his misery.. he was saved by the Crusaders at the weekend... but enough is enough...
Lived in London for 5 years but that got tiring. Been here 25+ but winters getting to me. Portugal may be next stop. Although still haven't ruled Mangawhai out.
BOP has the perfect climate for me.. probably retire there one day...

I’m in the BoP now… winter here is a diddle compared to growing up in South Canterbury. Bit sick of the rain though, it’s been a wet month ever since Foster took over.

Who would take Robertson before a World Cup?
France seem happy with Fabien Galthié
Ireland are overjoyed with Farrell
Wales - would they shunt Kiwi Pivac to put in Kiwi Robertson?
Scotland - Townsend is doing an OK job - but would Robertson see it as a chance to cement his reputation?
England - Jones is pretty much there till after the World Cup
Italy - nay chance
Japan - possible stepping stone with good money attached?
Argentina - Cheika just arrived and Contepomi locked in for after the RWC
South Africa - can't see it
The only one even possibly likely would be Australia with Rennie getting mixed results from a reasonably decent team.
Seems like Robertson wouldn't probably have much options with the top tier sides anyway? And if the NZ Rugby tell Robertson that the role is his after the World Cup then surely he would take that offer?

I remember Dunedin winters... Bit like Yorkshire! But have spent the past twenty years visiting the BOP region regularly... Many a stroll around The Mount in July with a warm sun... and lovely looking sea...Guy Smiley wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 9:19 am I’m in the BoP now… winter here is a diddle compared to growing up in South Canterbury. I’m not suggesting anyone would… but now is the time to do any deal for AFTER the RWC. No union… hang on, only NZR would be silly enough to leave negotiations until close to or after that.
Henry has come out and told us that is exactly what they did regarding Rennie. By the time they thought to get in touch he was already contracted to Australia. They’re clearly dumb enough to assume Razor will likewise simply be available if they decide they want to use him.
If I was in Razor’s shoes I’d be looking for a contract to sign right now and as he’s clearly a guy with a unique perspective on personal and professional development I reckon his best options will be off shore… and he will know that now.
That arrogance in NZ Rugby that any coach interested will reject all other offers... until they (maybe) come knocking at the 11th hour...Guy Smiley wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 2:09 pmI’m not suggesting anyone would… but now is the time to do any deal for AFTER the RWC. I wonder if the actual story was that Razor rejected the offer.
I’d read rumours of such that Razor had rejected, but Schmidt had said yes. But I’m guessing that yes was simply for a more hands on role.
Oh well, I guess this will go quiet, until we lose the Bledisloe

What about losing to Argentina twice... will they let that slide?
I can't imagine Razor turned them down... though I think they should get a signed contract for him to take over in 2024... why wait and risk someone else getting him?

Absolutely the right callThe New Zealand Rugby board has "unanimously agreed" Ian Foster should remain as national team coach through to next year's World Cup.
Vancouver winters would be similar to Dunedin. Wet and cool - 0 to 12 deg from Dec to Feb/March. I'm married to the Irish which is her incentive for Algarve. All my family still in AKL but mate in Mangawhai and would prefer the so called winterless north. Although as GS said, this winter has been bloody wet. Still 17/18 deg up there all the time. Summers here are a bit short too. Don't get me wrong, loved bringing kids up here but youngest now in last year at Uni and oldest has a 1 way ticket to NZ in 2 months, so world is ours to move to (but we're not loaded so prefer cheaper cost of living).Grandpa wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 10:49 amI remember Dunedin winters... I am NOT OK with them keeping Fozzie. Not at all. But on the Razor front, the current term in his mind was end of RWC 2023. So, he was always going to either hang around for that, or not hang round for that. Nothing has changed except he may have got his hopes up in last few weeks. I hope he stays, but if he doesn't, he wasn't going to anyway. I think that makes sense.

I need to explore north of Auckland more... it's one part of NZ I haven't spent much time in... never really went north of Wenderholm growing up.. and only once to Mangawhai Heads... and only once to the Bay of Islands...
You could be right about Razor maybe wanting 4 years, rather than 18 months....
I may be being too harsh on the place. As I said, great for bringing kids up, who learnt to ski on Whistler/Blackcomb and are now really good skiers. Lots of outdoor stuff, even running into friendly 300kg bears. As I said, looking for a bit more 'winterless' now so North suits better for me, not that BoP or Hawkes Bay get too cold.Grandpa wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 3:29 pmWell you put me off living in Vancouver then... I'm just hoping that is what Razor thought all along, that 2023 would be his time. Lack of good AB results between now, and including RWC, would/should certainly help keep him home. As someone said above, not a lot of opportunities between now and then anywhere else anyway. Japan being possibly a good one to wet his feet in the international waters and get some good coin while at it.

Otherwise there is no reason not to lock Razor in now as the new All Black coach from 2024...
I love that drive from Vancouver to Whistler via the coastal road...
Personally, I think Foster is doing a great job and is a fine ambassador for NZ rugby. Tie him in now for a few more years before he gets poached.

Nice try PCPhil, but we're not buying what you're selling.
Grandpa, Sea to Sky Highway is indeed arguably the nicest drive in the world, especially coming back.

Is nobody thinking of Enzedder?
Didn't he pledge to never watch the All Blacks again while Foster remained as coach?
Now that Fozz has them fizzing, when do you reckon Enz will return to the fold?

Foster summed it up best with this comment
Shame he did not expand on the reality of this statement and any reasons for the ABs now being down at 5th.The first five Tests this year were always going to be immensely tough. It's not often we play five Tests in a row against teams that are basically ranked higher than us in the world.
