Part of my journey to atheism was just having a critical eye to what we were told was,"God's Word", & how the religious bureaucracy turn that into bullshit !
Moses got ten commandments that could be carved on two stone tables, & the Hebrew Religious Civil Service turned that into massive amount of crappy little rules around what you could eat & when etc, etc, etc
Then they sat around waiting for a Messiah, & when a small part of the community said; "Hey, this guy here is the Messiah !", he looked at the mess that the relatively simple set of rules had become, & he dumbed it down even further ....
"Love one & other, as I have loved you !"
Somehow even that simple fucking message can't be processed, & now so many Evangelical Christians; & they are focused on Hating, rather than Loving their fellow man.
The bottom line is that the more pious they claim to be, the bigger the fucking hypocrite they'll be !

Actually Moses got a lot more instructions, which is most of Leviticus and maybe another book, can't remember. Jesus was fine with the death penalty and good with slavery too. He certainly wasn't some hippy type by our standards.fishfoodie wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 12:05 am Part of my journey to atheism was just having a critical eye to what we were told was,"God's Word", & how the religious bureaucracy turn that into bullshit !

The other issue you've got is the suggestion that the Bible was wrong in places in the old testament. Or worse, god was wrong. The evangelicals have it pretty close I'd say. It's not a loving religion, the whole Jesus loves you is just propaganda to try and cover up the fact it isn't.
To try and bring it around, the Christian us right can rely heavily on religion to drive votes, which probably brings them quite a few votes from some immigrants too, who vote more on faith than what's actually good for them. And then seemingly miss the fact that the republicans don't seem to live by Christian law themselves, just want too impose it on others.

Religion is like broccoli or your uncle Jim's penis. If it was forced on you as a child you're probably gonna hate it as an adult.

The bible is a big book - well, collection of books. You can make it say whatever you want which is rather open to abuse.fishfoodie wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 12:05 am Part of my journey to atheism was just having a critical eye to what we were told was,"God's Word", & how the religious bureaucracy turn that into bullshit !

To be fair, on the "crappy little rules" Most ofthe food hygeine ones were sensible for the time and region. A friend who is now a rabbi made this point. I then reminded her that she had a refrigerator and didn't that make them seem rather out of date.
My tolerance for religion drops daily while my tolerance for most other things goes the other way.

They get a surprisingly high proportion of the Hispanic vote due to their abortion stance. A not insignificant number of black people in the US are also very 'Christian' in the homophobic and anti-abortion kind of way. Faith certainly provides the Republicans with the means to reach those who should really ignore them out of hand.Raggs wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 7:44 amActually Moses got a lot more instructions, which is most of Leviticus and maybe another book, can't remember. They don't really, and we know from archaeology that people in the region were eating plenty of pigs, so the prohibition there is cultural rather than anything to do with hygiene. Same for not cooking meat in milk, which the Romans do famously well without ill effect.Dinsdale Piranha wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 12:22 pmThe bible is a big book - well, collection of books. Pigs weren't even exclusively named. It prevent hyraxes, rabbits and camels from being eaten too, that could have helped them a lot. Seafood restrictions also prevented squid, catfish and eels.Brazil wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 2:43 pmThey don't really, and we know from archaeology that people in the region were eating plenty of pigs, so the prohibition there is cultural rather than anything to do with hygiene. The meat and dairy thing wasn't a dietary restriction as such, it was due to a nearby tribe/belief that if you cook a baby goat in it's mothers milk, and eat it, it's lucky or something. Then paranoia that someone may trick them, or they might make a mistake, pushed that to every meat (including tuna for some) and any type of dairy product being even served together, or within so much time.
Give a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
Did they include beavers and otters in the aquatic restrictions? Christians used to eat beaver (snigger) on fridays on the grounds that it lived in the water, so clearly wasn't subject to the prohibition on meat.Raggs wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 2:55 pm

My mates who keep a kosher household have separate fridges for meat and dairy. Oh how they laughed when somebody accidentally put sausages in the dairy one during a barbecue.
Unless ultra strict (keeping separate fridges, or even kitchens), the laws were bent plenty. One I always found hilarious was that milk from the sabbath had to be thrown on the floor. It didn't say you couldn't then sell it. So dairy's break a bit of tile off the floor, clean it, and put it in the bottom of the milk tank. Then all the milk has technically been thrown on the floor, in accordance to the rules.Brazil wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 3:09 pmDid they include beavers and otters in the aquatic restrictions? On Topic; the Special Prosecutor isn't letting the grass grow, & has asked the Court to hold the Shitgibbon in contempt, because he still hasn't provided a sworn statement, that all classified materials have been returned !
I'm guessing the NARA, & the DoJ know better that the Orange turd what documents haven't been returned, & they want to get another false Statement, so they can bury whoever signs it in prison for a long time .... or they get them to give evidence that the turd told them to sign it, & that makes their conspiracy, & obstruction of Justice case against their ultimate target !

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 41834.htmlThe Department of Justice has asked a judge to hold Donald Trump’s team in contempt for failing to comply with a subpoena to return classified documents, according to a report.
Federal investigators launched a probe to see if the one-term president broke the law by taking government documents, some marked top secret, with him when he left the White House in January 2021.

The NT does take steps to say the persecution doesn't come so much from a place of righteous anger but rather is done out of love and care. In the end, the batshit insane intolerant right, are closer to what the bible calls for than the left for the most part.

He's only declared for 2024 this early, because he's shitting himself over all the criminal cases he's facing, & he needs his candidacy to claim it's all a political.
In the meanwhile, he'll also attack anyone else who declares, & generally fling shit; & I think there will be a growing number in the GOP who would welcome a prosecution, so they can suddenly discover morals, & force him out of the Party

Forcing him out through the launching of any prosecution is a plausible short term fix for the GOP... the blind alley they've run themselves into isn't going to be so easy to back out of though.

The threat isn't the grifting loudmouth. It's the reasonable seeming man in a smart suit that doesn't have the lunatic baggage. He's the one that walks through the door Trump opened, and delivers the horror show vision of America the GOP is touting
There's now a young generation of right wing types who are basically looney tunes. The silly bastard has been referred to the Justice Department by the Jan. 6 Committee on 4 counts, including insurrection.
Sadly:
Sadly:
https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/12/19 ... ttee-trumpThe committee accused the former president of inciting insurrection and other federal crimes as it referred him to the Justice Department, which does not have to act on its recommendations.

To do nothing would not only be a gutless, gutless act it really expands the risk as to what someone does next knowing it's a consequence free arena. So really the only alternative the DoJ has is to bring a different number of charges.

The House "Ways & Means" Committee has 7 years worth of his tax returns, & now is planning a gift to prosecutors around the Nation, by having a vote tomorrow to make them public.
Merry Christmas Mother Fucker !!!
On the Jan 6th recommendations; I can see either Meadows, or Eastman, running to the Feds to make a deal. They're both up to their necks in criminal behavior, & smart enough to know that they've no protection, & the first rat, is the only one that doesn't see the inside of prison.
