Feel like jumping in to a DAC/Torq tete a tete could be a mistake but:
1) 99% sure we delayed recognising Israel because of the King David hotel incident etc. It was an American plan when push came to shove, we had largely decent relationships with the Arabs.
2) any attempt to pretend that English/British anti-semitism was particularly egregious in the context of a rabidly anti-semitic continent is just nonsense. The Jews were the whipping boys of medieval europe and the English kings were no better or worse than anyone else in that regard. It wasn’t a coincidence that Jews returned to England when there wasn’t a king, and from there British Jews became a very well integrated and tolerated minority. The pressure for a homeland for the Jewish people came from the constant massacres and persecution in Eastern and Central Europe. The Anglo Jews were happy to sponsor it but were quite happy in their London townhouses (and didn’t want Russian Jews from the Pale to come to England for asylum as they felt they’d tarnish their hard won reputation, being illiterate peasants and all)

There's an interesting one and modern day Israelis would do well to pay attention to it. The British authorities had been cranking up the repression, which increased tensions with the Jewish population (as well as international and UK domestic opposition to the mandate government) and the reaction to the bombing blew the lid off that.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Mon Oct 16, 2023 9:06 pm Feel like jumping in to a DAC/Torq tete a tete could be a mistake but:

Bibi is plain wrong. Israel isn't fighting a war. It's fighting an insurgency and using the tools of war just feeds the insurgency.

Blaming the Brits is the fucking easy way out, it's lazy, facilie and down right dishonest.
The trouble in the ME is because Arabs can't fucking stand Jews and have no intention of letting them get on with living their lives, they're just to fucking weak to finish the job, currently.
Anything else is just stupid.

I don't like the Israeli people being used like this.

Maybe Mr Netanyahu and Mr Haniyeh can work through their differences in a nice cell in The Hague.

It's an old article but well worth a read on why the conflict won't resolve and also points towards what Palestinians are actually aiming to achieve with their barbarous activities.
TLDR
No peace deal has worked because the concessions required of Israel are more onerous than maintaining the status quo.
Palestinian strategy is to make that status quo "expensive" for Israel. Also breaking chances of rapprochement with other Arab nations.

Hamas has been legally declared as a terrorist organisation in the UK. Yet the BBC have created internal guidelines to not use the word terrorist.SaintK wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 6:34 pmAnd other broadcasters as agreed with OFCOMSlick wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 4:17 pmJust been ripped off by an Egyptian. Sky and Channel 4 are not state funded, and can leftily do what they want.
But to refuse to call Hamas terrorists by the BBC is frankly appalling.
Do you seriously have no issue with them avoiding calling Hamas terrorists.
Is it massively important that they are referred to as terrorists?Ymx wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 7:22 pmHamas has been legally declared as a terrorist organisation in the UK. Yet the BBC have created internal guidelines to not use the word terrorist.

This is like arguing with vatniks.
"Okay so can we talk about the large numbers of people getting killed?"
"No, we are going to talk about the nomenclature to apply to one of the parties instead"

On the face of it, it sounds sensible. But a brief bit of unpicking, what? The BBC are worried to be thought of against a terrorist outfit… impartial to those who mutilate, torture and murder civilians - babies and all.In the same correspondence, another BBC chief suggested that journalists’ safety could be put at risk if the corporation was perceived to be taking sides
This is not what impartial means, ffs. They shouldn’t be impartial to murderous terrorists committing heinous crimes.

Even if the figure of this particular incident gets revised down to, say 50, do you agree that far, far, far more Palestinians are going to die than Israelis died last week?EnergiseR2 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 7:46 pmI think the problem is the figures regarding deaths out of Gaza have been, are and will be bollox with the assistance of the UN. Hamas have not Israel like every political party in Ireland would have you believe. Arabs say fine we will accept Israel as an entity 30 years ago we would all be drinking Levant Orange Juice and going on holidays to Tel Aviv by now
Not sure you meant to reply to me?EnergiseR2 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 8:02 pm Oh what a surprise and are you telling me Raggs that the UN again confirmed deaths purely on the basis of what a Palestinian official said. Anyway come back and have a chat with me when you have the videos of Israeli lads sitting on dead naked women and spitting at them. That's the bar

Especially when they have a track record of telling lies, half-truths after similar incidents, only to belatedly, & in response to overwhelming evidence admitting to the truth .... long after the MSM has moved onI like neeps wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 8:14 pmI often find people who destroy a hospital and kill hundreds admit to it readily.
Its a synonym for baddie basically but the job of a newsgathering and disseminating organisation should be to report on what's going on. Not sure about babies, but I believe I can confirm at the very least toddlers, though I wish I couldn't, babies were definitely killed. Can also tell you that the female sentries that were keeping lookout for some of the kibbutzes had their eyes plucked out of their skulls before being murdered. Burning tyres were rolled into houses to drive people out so they could be shot (or remain in and die of smoke/burns). Plenty of rapes too before murders.Uncle fester wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 8:28 pm Was it ever established if the beheaded babies story was factual?

The lies are being caught out already.
WaPo saying the hospital has already been hit by Israeli weapons. Who do they think they're kidding? They've been bombing civilian infrastructure the last two weeks and they think we'll believe this was a Hamas malfunction? Just stupid.

& who said the bombing, if it was by Israel was, deliberately targeting civilians ?
The Israeli Ambassador to the UK got on radio the other day, & lied thru her teeth, in the full knowledge that she was doing so.
If Israel wants to claim some moral high ground, they can't just ignore the object fact that collective punishment of civilians is a war crime, & write off any civilian deaths as all Hamas's fault.
