My son did a gap year at Queens College in Thornton, coaching sport. Coming from a Paul Roos environment it was totally different. Winning at all cost is driving the likes of Paarl Gym, Boys High, Paul Roos into top sport schools in South Africa. when the u7C teams play Interschools they dont play for fun. Thats where Handre Pollard comes from, that two winning penalties he took in the last two games origin from Paarl Interschools who had 30,000+ attendances.Slick wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 9:50 amYou have an awesome rugby culture which is being destroyed in the eyes of many by acting the cunts.OomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 9:47 amSorry I don't understand.Slick wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 9:38 am
You see, this is what disappoints me so much about SA rugby over the last few years.
I grew up as a kid adoring SA rugby as my aunt would send me a new strip every year - Springbok, Western Province, Transvaal - along with regular videos of matches - in fairness it made my parents life a little difficult in the 70's and 80's as I wore my Springbok jersey everywhere.
As I got older I took every opportunity to get to SA and my aunt and uncle would always take me to games, I absolutely loved the whole experience and rugby culture. I deliberately went out to SA for the entire 2003 WC and spent the whole competition in and around Durban with a group of rugby lads that included an ex Springbok and an ex Natal captain - it was the time of my life being totally immersed in this incredible rugby culture.
So I don't know what has happened over the last few years, it has been such a steep decent into bitterness and paranoia. All the undermining of rugby tradition, the win at all costs and fuck the game stuff. It's really sad, frankly.
You're not the only one Oom. Slick is rambling on about fuck knows what. The truth is this is the best Bok team culture there's ever been, the most open team for fans and media, and the most heavily supported Bok team ever and very likely the most heavily supported sports team in SA's history. There was a huge spontaneous victory/celebration march through Joburg CBD of black fans after the Boks beat England, something totally unprecedented.
Win or lose this Bok side have done more for rugby in SA than anything in my lifetime. Without Rassie there's no Nienaber, no Kolisi as captain, no Kolbe as a Springbok at all (he wouldn't have been selected by anyone else, he proved most of us wrong), the list goes on.
Anyone who thinks Rassie hasn't been brilliant doesn't know what they're talking about. For a South African in this era the test of rugby intelligence has been "how quickly did you realise Rassie knows substantially more about this sport than you ever will, and basically all his calls will work out?". In this community Hout and Yank13 scored highest, they were both immediate.

Slick has got a massive chip on his shoulder when it comes to SA, by no means limited to the rugby. No idea what caused it, nor do I care, but he’s on every SA thread making snide remarks which does get a bit tiresome._Os_ wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 10:32 amYou're not the only one Oom. 100% Ox. There is something incredible about this Bok team. Despite all of South Africa's challenges, the nation has united behind them even moreso than 2019, 2007, 1995. The buzz around them in incredible. Even here in Kenya, a lot of people are talking about them which is a first for me.
In Namibia same thing. i have clients there and they braaied last week and will be doing something this weekend too watching the match....we carry the hopes of Africa on our shouldersassfly wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 10:41 am 100% Ox. We have an awesome Rugby history.
I don't believe our Rugby culture is that admirable (Apartheid selection policies, Rebel Tours, Corne Krige, Andre Markgraaf, Kamp Staaldraad, Rassie...), plus many Bok fans have very thin skins and react badly to criticism.
You couldn’t be more wrong, but hey ho.Calculon wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 10:41 amSlick has got a massive chip on his shoulder when it comes to SA, by no means limited to the rugby. None of us have a damn clue what you're going on about.
You seem to think SA rugby culture has declined from where it was in the 1970s and 1980s, when you wore a Springbok jersey everywhere. 1981 Bok tour to NZ was a real high point for you it seems.
Have you considered you're the madman not us?
Get fucked, you know exactly what I’m talking about. I specifically said twice in the post that I meant the last few years. You know, the bit that covers supporters physically assaulting refs, videos being made to ruin a refs careers, death threats to refs, death threats to players, coaches cos playing water boys, abusing HIA protocols. That kind of thing._Os_ wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 11:50 amNone of us have a damn clue what you're going on about.

What other rugby nation has a charge sheet like that?

Piet attacking the ref was in 2002, the year after at the 2003 RWC a Samoan fan invaded the pitch and tried to tackle a Bok player but no one remembers that. Back in 1974 the Durban crowd invaded the pitch to stop Lions players beating Tommy Bedford's prostrate body, it was a crowd invasion accompanied by throwing beer cans/bottles/naartjies, my old man was part of that it's one of his favourite rugby stories. Durban of course is where Piet invaded the pitch and attacked a ref too. The Natal rugby culture you claim to admire ( ), is the same one that has been known to go on a hooligan rampage sometimes.
Throwing naartjies at the opposing team bus/the opposing players/the ref, is basically a generations old tradition at this point. Rare to happen in the stadium now though, oppo team bus may still get some attention. That's across SA.
So that's wrong on it being unique to SA and wrong on it being any better in the past.
Reinach got a death threat this RWC accompanied by a photo of his son, from a French fan. I pointed this out on the French match thread and also pointed out that Dupont had criticised the reffing post match. You posted on that thread after that post, but posted to attack Bok supporters.
So that's wrong on it being unique to SA, again.
What is wrong with being a water boy? There were no rules broken, Rassie wasn't the coach. World Rugby then changed the rules.
This HIA thing is something that exists in the minds of conspiracy theorists who have Rassie living rent free in their head. There is no abuse of the HIA system, a player has to be hit on the head by an opponent to go for a HIA.
... Generally a lot of this is far outside the remit of Rassie. Rugby is a big sport in SA, dumb to think rugby has a unique set of special values, rather than just being a small sport in most places. In the UK if rugby were the size of soccer and soccer was the size of rugby, then rugby would look exactly like soccer does in the UK today with the same hooligan problem. There'll always be a hooligan element in any sport which is large enough to have one. If rugby were big enough in Scotland, of course it would have an old firm rivalry.

When I was in the army in Pretoria I didnt miss a WP vs N Tvl match on Loftus. I received that naartjies everytime, but coming from Namaqualand, I ate them. Got bliksemed as a kid wasting food.

Classic Oom posting, this is why you're our captain for life Oom.
Also, ja you supported Rassie since the start. I took until the end of his first season, I was unhappy there were too many Stomps. Now I'm wearing my Boland jersey.

There are some good vibes coming from Boland. They want to play CC premium next year. Got some funding from Rupert & kie. Rupert put Stellenbosch FC on the map in no time._Os_ wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 1:55 pmOomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2023 1:37 pm When I was in the army in Pretoria I didnt miss a WP vs N Tvl match on Loftus. Springbok team will be announced tomorrow, thursday, 9 a.m.
Impossible to predict what rasnaber is going to do. Could well be the same 23 as the last two games again, could be a 6-2 split with 1 or 2 surprise selections, like Wiese, moodie, kleyn... Imho, they got selections wrong against England given the conditions, so lets see what they do
