You see, this is what disappoints me so much about SA rugby over the last few years.

I grew up as a kid adoring SA rugby as my aunt would send me a new strip every year - Springbok, Western Province, Transvaal - along with regular videos of matches - in fairness it made my parents life a little difficult in the 70's and 80's as I wore my Springbok jersey everywhere.

As I got older I took every opportunity to get to SA and my aunt and uncle would always take me to games, I absolutely loved the whole experience and rugby culture. I deliberately went out to SA for the entire 2003 WC and spent the whole competition in and around Durban with a group of rugby lads that included an ex Springbok and an ex Natal captain - it was the time of my life being totally immersed in this incredible rugby culture.

So I don't know what has happened over the last few years, it has been such a steep decent into bitterness and paranoia. All the undermining of rugby tradition, the win at all costs and fuck the game stuff. It's really sad, frankly.

My son did a gap year at Queens College in Thornton, coaching sport. Coming from a Paul Roos environment it was totally different. Winning at all cost is driving the likes of Paarl Gym, Boys High, Paul Roos into top sport schools in South Africa. when the u7C teams play Interschools they dont play for fun. Thats where Handre Pollard comes from, that two winning penalties he took in the last two games origin from Paarl Interschools who had 30,000+ attendances.

100% Ox. There is something incredible about this Bok team. Despite all of South Africa's challenges, the nation has united behind them even moreso than 2019, 2007, 1995. The buzz around them in incredible. Even here in Kenya, a lot of people are talking about them which is a first for me.

Piet attacking the ref was in 2002, the year after at the 2003 RWC a Samoan fan invaded the pitch and tried to tackle a Bok player but no one remembers that. Back in 1974 the Durban crowd invaded the pitch to stop Lions players beating Tommy Bedford's prostrate body, it was a crowd invasion accompanied by throwing beer cans/bottles/naartjies, my old man was part of that it's one of his favourite rugby stories. Durban of course is where Piet invaded the pitch and attacked a ref too. The Natal rugby culture you claim to admire ( ), is the same one that has been known to go on a hooligan rampage sometimes.

Throwing naartjies at the opposing team bus/the opposing players/the ref, is basically a generations old tradition at this point. Rare to happen in the stadium now though, oppo team bus may still get some attention. That's across SA.

This HIA thing is something that exists in the minds of conspiracy theorists who have Rassie living rent free in their head. There is no abuse of the HIA system, a player has to be hit on the head by an opponent to go for a HIA.
