Kinda frustrated. I have thought for some time the pendulum was swung a bit to far and some arrests and sentences for hurty/unwise words showed we need to legislate more strongly in favour of free speech.
However the rests in relation to recent riots are clearly a reaction to incitement which has being a common law offence for centuries even in Murica.
Thos complaining now are completely disingenuous

I honestly despise the bloke with an absolute passion. Whenever there is a big issue (national or international) he throws his weight around opining on stuff in an utterly obnoxious fashion.
It is so lamentable that a tabloid hack with no real expertise of anything he talks about has positioned himself to be some kind of authority on current affairs.
And on that note you seriously can't make this stuff up.... As if on cue Piers argues with multiple Olympic medals winner Michael Johnson about what it means to be a champion. We should care about both. Not to labour the point but these riots started because the child of an asylum seeker murdered white children in cold blood, a week or so after a man who I understand was born in Nigeria stabbed an army officer to death in cold blood in Kent. Clearly there is an issue of deadly violence against white Brits, in the same way that there is an issue of mob violence by white Brits towards Muslims in particular.
A multi-ethnic society requires a much stronger state that does not allow ethnic tensions like this to surface. You prevent that by requiring greater integration, reducing ethnic enclaves through the allocation of social housing and an absolute zero tolerance policing and justice effort (including the deportation of violent foreign nationals and heavy jail sentences for citizens). That is not what we’re seeing, and it rolls the wicket for the violence we are seeing.
If we do nothing, speak in euphemisms and platitudes and far more heavily police one side we’ll be back here again the next time there is a racially based killing.
Not sure the evidence supports that. The more the state tries to social engineer, the closer and closer we get to authoritarianism.

When I went to primary school there was never more than one male teacher at the school. Every other teacher, throughout my eight years there, was female.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2024 5:38 pm Feminisation of the education sector is so blindingly obvious, it takes something akin to motivated reasoning to pretend it hasn’t happened.
And ‘boys will be boys’ doesn’t mean ‘let boys be dickheads’, it means boys need to burn off steam more than girls do, and schools in particular need to accommodate that. Rugby being an example of an excellent way to channel this.
My school would always schedule PE and games for the worst behaved classes as the first lesson of the day, for obvious reasons
Since this was the liberal and enlightened '60s, the sole male teacher was the headmaster of course. I guess if women are allowed to be the head now, this could count as feminisation.
Wtf are you on about. Andrew Callahan is a better reporter than most on networks with billions of dollars. That's an excellent piece showing you how people on both sides think. If this is part of your faux outrage schtick it's a really odd thread to do it on. If you're being sincere then maybe a break from this thread would do you some good

Meh, fuck 'em.
They used to hang or send people to Australia for much less.
I have zero sympathy with these numpties.
As for previous comments about them having no male teachers as surrogate father figures, I think some here have rose-tinted memories.
Lots of the male teachers I had at school were psychopaths who enjoyed hitting children for the smallest infraction.
Ol'Birbalsingh is an absolute joke. Successful headteacher, but repeatedly shitting the bed in order to appeal to the further-right and feed her need for attention and validation is not a good look. For someone who must be quite smart, she says a lot of really dumb shit quite regularly. It's as if a GB News "expert" also had a good job.
I'm with you on that, there was a history teacher at ours that used to punish a particular boy by beating his bare arse with a huge protractor in front of the rest of the class. Oh, and Mr Jones who dropped one of my mates head first onto the changing room floor because he said he felt sick. Geography teacher who used to throw his massive bunch of keys or board rubber at your head, good pace and aim, obviously a fairly decent bowler.mat the expat wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 6:23 amAs for previous comments about them having no male teachers as surrogate father figures, I think some here have rose-tinted memories.

At my primary school there was a teacher who used to drink bottles of beer from a case, the sort of case bottles of milk/pop used to be delivered in (and presumably beers too), and then later in the day after draining a few bottles he'd be liable to throw empty bottles or even the case at kids aged 10 and younger. He was never my teacher, but oddly it came up as a topic of conversation in the playground, sometimes he still gets a mention today from those small number I still keep in touch with from primary school daysSlick wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 9:38 amDid we go to the same school!epwc wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 9:26 amI'm with you on that, there was a history teacher at ours that used to punish a particular boy by beating his bare arse with a huge protractor in front of the rest of the class. My only exposure to him was in PE lessons when he sometimes took the football lessons, and there he was actually very good given he was a former semi-pro footballer (actually he told us he used to play for PSG and we believed him)
I think it wasn't that unusual, I know loads of men of my generation and older who have similar stories. In fact I'm now mates with someone who attended the same school 20 years before me and he still recoils in horror at the thought of the place.
I suspect the concept of teacher as father figure also varies dramatically by class size and whether it was a public school.
As someone whose dad was mostly absent / overseas during my school years, and who went to both an expensive public school and a local college, the boarding school obviously gave staff far more opportunity to get to know me and advise me, but there was no obvious father figure, and when faced with some major life challenges in college it was a woman who helped me out massively.
And yes, at (mixed) boarding school I did have a teacher who threw things at the boys. In fairness, a good half the time it was catching practice with a cricket ball, or Mars bars for good results, but there was the occasional punishment throw too...

I got hit over the head - hard - with an enormous French-English dictionary by my French teacher. My parents didn't even remotely believe me. 3 years later he was sacked for - hitting a pupil over the head with a dictionary. I made some mileage out of that one.epwc wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 9:26 amI'm with you on that, there was a history teacher at ours that used to punish a particular boy by beating his bare arse with a huge protractor in front of the rest of the class. Violence had been drummed out of schools by the time I went, but in my school it was replaced by teachers having significant drink problems and not really given a shit.
These might be related - not being allowed to knock sense into us little shits would drive most to booze and/or apathy.

Same sort of stuff at my school, many a board rubber thrown, chalk was easier to dodge. I got hit round the head with a book once, still not sure why. Saw a teacher get into an argument with a pupil and throw a chair at him. Had an occasional PE teacher who would stand outside the showers and act as a towel rail. Ahh, the good old days.

When I was looking at careers I did briefly consider teaching - there’s an extent to which talking about history and geography all day before coaching cricket and rugby in the afternoon looked appealing. Then I remembered the total lack of discipline and general descent into Lord of the Flies stuff every time there was an opening at my school and thought again. God knows how they manage itOxbow wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 1:17 pm Same sort of stuff at my school, many a board rubber thrown, chalk was easier to dodge. We all cheered one day when, in the rural area we lived, one of the kids drove to school in his tractor (Just to register) and then walked into the class and hit one teacher who had smashed his brother's head off the table the day before.epwc wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 9:26 amI'm with you on that, there was a history teacher at ours that used to punish a particular boy by beating his bare arse with a huge protractor in front of the rest of the class. Among those that stay. Most just leave. The country is rightly bricking it over NHS staffing at the moment, but teacher retention and recruitment is a budding crisis. Especially in STEM subjects.inactionman wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 1:09 pm Violence had been drummed out of schools by the time I went, but in my school it was replaced by teachers having significant drink problems and not really given a shit.

There was a lot of violence among pupils in the years before I got to secondary school, it was still there when I got to first year but petered out as our cohort went up through school. Some say it was because the worst of the violent staff had gone by then, although there were still bullies who threw chalk dusters or in the case of a woodwork teacher, the first thing that came to hand including a wood plane.
A good few of the staff resorted to public humiliation of children instead, this bullying was carried on into the playground.
At primary school when I was nine I was made to stand up in front of a class and hit four times on my outstretched hands with a heavy leather tawse by man in his thirties, this was for pushing a football out of the hands of the guy in front of me when we were going in to the school at nine am. Some other primary school teachers used a large wooden ruler instead of the leather tawse.
I also "got the tawse" at secondary school for talking to my mate in class. I was 12 then.
Others seem to be belted on a regular basis. It was eventually outlawed after I left school. I remember a news item about birching in schools on the Isle of Man, the news was that they retained the right for teachers to beat children with sticks.
Good old masculine teaching, that.

Ah The good old tawse.....
Our French teacher ( a women in her thirties) was particularly adept in the use of that weapon.
We found that a quick rub of iron fillings on the hands before being hit would produce lots of little cuts making the hands bloody after a couple of hits- that freaked her out and reduced the volume of beatings.

'Real' grown men hitting young kids with a leather strap worked wonders ... it legitimized violence as a solution.
It has to be said though, that behaviour in schools, particularly in Scotland, is at an all time low.

My missus is a school librarian and my niece is a history teacher, both have seen a huge decline in behaviour since they started in the job. My niece has witnessed female teachers on the floor reduced to tears from the abuse they've received. A similar thing happened at my missus's school where a female teacher was receiving overtly sexual comments. The headteacher just said "Ah boys will be boys" and that was it. When there's no discipline coming from the top (and also often from home), teachers don't stand a chance.
Timeline probably dovetails with their 35-45 year old parents not getting the strap when they were in High School.
