Ridiculous false equivalency.Jim Lahey wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2024 5:56 am I find US elections quite entertaining but the sheer number of attack ads on Trump I see on social media, Reddit, this thread, the language used by the likes of the BBC etc., to describe his events, leads me to believe that both sides are as bad as each other when it comes to spreading shit about their opponent.
Trump is a massive karnt, and there is no lack of ammo to throw punches at him tbf. But I feel like we've been here before, and all the Democrat-suppprting "I'm so much smarter than MAGA types" banter can end badly.
Would there not be an argument for Democrats to largely ignore Trump spouting shit and just focus on selling their own ideas and policies?
President Biden and US politics catchall
No. Trump will dominate the media with his bs if you just ignore him, and the media in the US is such that if you don't point out his garbage yourself, it won't be challenged.Jim Lahey wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2024 5:56 am I find US elections quite entertaining but the sheer number of attack ads on Trump I see on social media, Reddit, this thread, the language used by the likes of the BBC etc., to describe his events, leads me to believe that both sides are as bad as each other when it comes to spreading shit about their opponent.

And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?
The tone of their criticisms of Trump are far different from 2016, when Hillary called his supporters "deplorable", whereas Harris comes across as a far more decent and human person, not looking down on them in the same way.Jim Lahey wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2024 5:56 am I find US elections quite entertaining but the sheer number of attack ads on Trump I see on social media, Reddit, this thread, the language used by the likes of the BBC etc., to describe his events, leads me to believe that both sides are as bad as each other when it comes to spreading shit about their opponent.

I imagine over and over they want to ignore him and then consider (a) covering him makes us money, and (b) we can't let that slide else it might be taken as not having issue and even being accepting of the Trump takeBiffer wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2024 7:07 amNo.

I think you’re being overly generous, many of them want him to win so will not be critical of him or focus on the absolute garbage and his infirmity.Rhubarb & Custard wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2024 7:56 amI imagine over and over they want to ignore him and then consider (a) covering him makes us money, and (b) we can't let that slide else it might be taken as not having issue and even being accepting of the Trump takeBiffer wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2024 7:07 amNo.

I take it you don't actually follow US politics? You haven't heard Harris state her policies every opportunity she gets? It doesn't get the sound bites in the distant mass media and social media of course so for people not following the boring stuff of what is actually said over the length of an interview or rally gets skipped by.Jim Lahey wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2024 5:56 am I find US elections quite entertaining but the sheer number of attack ads on Trump I see on social media, Reddit, this thread, the language used by the likes of the BBC etc., to describe his events, leads me to believe that both sides are as bad as each other when it comes to spreading shit about their opponent.

Whereas Trump as always gets headlines because they're easy targets, or perhaps what a lot of people don't realise is that the troll farms deliberately farm exactly the theme you're parroting.
Of course when the Trump in question said he'd use the 1798 alien act, yes he actually went there, with all the connotations of what went on in WWII with Japanese heritage US citizens he should not be thoroughly condemned? The only point in Trump's favor with that one is that he almost certainly didn't know its history, just some absolute tosser like Miller let him know it could be used with a presidential executive order.

err, she objectifies them as attendees at Nazi rallies.
And Joy has reverted to utter Hatred as she reveals her true inner self.
Any male who won't vote for her is "misogynist and racist".
As the first presidential aspirant to drop out of the 2020 Democrat Primary she blamed that dismal and humiliating performance on Democrat voters being misogynistic and racist.
And her entire professional career has been propelled to grossly unwarranted heights through the old adage of "It's not who you know, but who you blow."

Oh, that's wonderful Flockwitt.
Having apparently heard Heels Up state her policies over and over and deciphered them, you can easily clarify for us whether the real Harris agenda is the one as depicted on the left in this illustration or the one on the right.
The relevance of this link to this thread comes near the end when the number of sexual assault allegations against Trump is mentioned, but it’s not the number, it’s the seeming irrelevance of them that is the “interesting” part

'tis a time when the misogynists feel entitled to claim Harris has advanced to where she is on the back of sexual favours and even call her 'Heels Up'. Okay they're disgusting, but they're committed to being disgusting
Anybody actually doing that must have a mental age of 12 or something around that.Rhubarb & Custard wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 5:09 am 'tis a time when the misogynists feel entitled to claim Harris has advanced to where she is on the back of sexual favours and even call her 'Heels Up'. "Heels Up" isn't even a clever insult. Is the 'H' a connection, because it doesn't rhyme. At least some assholes were 'clever' enough to use "Joe and the Ho" ... but, ffs, where's the dignity? I'll never forget an interview I heard around the time of his first election with a lifelong Republican, a war veteran, saying he could never support Trump because he didn't have class. There's no specific talk about helping his supporters, just whinging about things said / done to him and riling up prejudices / stoking fires with lies against others.Rhubarb & Custard wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 5:09 am 'tis a time when the misogynists feel entitled to claim Harris has advanced to where she is on the back of sexual favours and even call her 'Heels Up'. With as close as things are at the moment, one wonders if Trump could have walked back into the White House by just being nice and sane, present a few actual ideas. ... hah, just keep doubling down on the insanity.

That's the issue though... his appeal is the hatred he articulates.
We forget how complex an emotion it is and how deeply appealing it can be... I've mentioned before something along the lines of that appeal being an outlet of sorts for all the anger and displacement being felt by those who are at the mercy of shifts in the wider economy. Most of us in the 'West'... closely aligned with the US politically and unfortunately, culturally, are more than familiar with the massive shift in wealth that has occurred over the last 30 or so years. We're all swept along with it... neocapitalism, economic rationalism, market driven blah blah.
Trump gives a voice to that huge slab of US life that is watching its comfortable complacency ripped away and he provides labels for the targets.
Hate is appealing. Especially when your other emotions are stunted or poorly developed.
Yep, hatred is Trump's political currency. Carville sums it up nicely:
"Trump understands that if he abandons misogyny and racism, then his voters will leave him. And he fundamentally understands that he's gotta keep watering this tree of misogyny and racism if he's going to be successful."

Don't believe the propaganda being spewed in Downunder news services, the Blue wave is coming Bro
After the election they will be on about how the polls got it wrong, falling into the Republicans yet again claiming a stolen election.
Dude when Florida is in play, have that from a Republican worker, the party is in real trouble.

A nice example of having no worthwhile point when talking about having a point
Dodgy as hell...
A French gambler’s $50m of bets inflated Trump’s odds - and is threatening democracy
Funded by billionaire Trump supporter Peter Thiel, Polymarket is forecasting a landslide for the Republican candidate. But some fear the massively inflated odds will be used by the Republican candidate as evidence that the election was stolen, writes Anthony Cuthbertson
Over the last three months, four accounts on a popular gambling site have placed thousands of bets totalling more than $50 million on Donald Trump winning the US presidential election next week. The bets, placed on prediction platform Polymarket, appear to have skewed the odds massively in Trump’s favour on the site, with the total figure representing roughly 2 per cent of all bets placed on the 2024 elections.
The four accounts – Fredi9999, Theo4, PrincessCaro, and Michie – have been traced back to a single French national with “extensive trading experience and [a] financial services background”, according to a statement from Polymarket. The betting platform said there was no evidence that the trader had placed the bets to deliberately boost Trump’s odds, though the incident has proved how easy it is for one wealthy individual to manipulate the market.
The latest figures from Polymarket give Trump a 66 per cent chance of beating Democratic rival Kamala Harris, who has just a one-in-three chance of taking the White House by these odds. Meanwhile, the latest national polling average compiled by FiveThirtyEight has a Trump victory at just 46.7 per cent and a Harris win at 48.1 per cent.
Some fear that Trump’s massively inflated betting odds could be used by his supporters as evidence that the election was stolen, while regulators have warned that gambling sites like Polymarket represent a significant threat to electoral integrity...

And Polymarket has been massively pushed on twitter as well. Top of my ‘for you’ and search pages every time, despite blocking. Too many people think that betting odds reflect the actual likelihood of something happening. They don’t, they reflect the likely loss the bookies will make.Gumboot wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 1:39 am Dodgy as hell...

Saw someone pointing out that if Elon can afford to spend $500 million on the election, he can afford to pay that and more in additional tax.
