Surrey/Hampshire borderlands and we had significantly more than a dusting, a good 3 inches or so which seems to have mostly stuck around. Houses and ground still covered, though everything seems to have melted off the trees so I imagine the rest will be soon to follow provided the sun hits it. That rules out most of our garden at the moment.

There seems to be a constant over egging of the severity as well. We were due to spend the weekend in Melrose but cancelled as there was 6 to 8 inches of snow forecast and in the end it was barely 2 to 3. Same just south of Edinburgh where we are. There is snow still lying from New Year but we barely had 2 inches yesterday when we were expecting 4 or 5. I appreciate they don't want to be downplaying things but you would hope they would've accurate enough to allow people to make informed plans.

We're 500 yards from there - the weather was uncomfortable out but nothing wildly dangerous, although I'd not fancy being on the castle ramparts or tower in any sort of rain this time of year!

The road that leads to the castle can be a bit iffy in cold weather if not well-gritted, we've had to stop and help push a few cars back up onto the main road to escape the ice. The weather's not been cold long enough to cause any problems though.

Its a lose:lose scenario for the forecasters to be fair - so I am not surprised they err on the side of caution, In my part of Embra it was a constant mix of snow and heavy freezing rain the last couple of days. Snow is difficult to forecast, a fraction of a degree or two difference in the temps can make the difference between getting very wet and being snowed in. A small difference in the temps and we could have seen a fair few inches of snow here and the usual traffic chaos. To be fair the Met Office forecast was pretty spot on throughout and the Cooncil have kept all the main roads/bus routes open and safe.

My real measure of how bad the weather is is if Kilspindie Golf Course is open or closed and yesterday it was closed due to snow and ice so the weather must have been bad! It's open today so weather must be on the up!

I disagree that they are being cautious!! Last named storm was Darragh on 6 Dec, yet they have had two more fronts come in with 60mph+ winds since then and neither even warranted a name. Pissing rain/snow too.

A few years ago any 60mph+ storm would definitely have been named.

We seem to be in our own microclimate out here on the east coast. It's often very windy, but we don't get the snow and ice or the heavy rain that others do - back in ye olden days our club was sometimes one of the very few playing a fixture in Scotland.
