Hegseth seems to be firming as King Donald's escape-goat du jour.

Won't be long before the king hardly knows him at all. Maybe never even heard of him before...

Thinking in all too innocent ways, I'd have thought the poor and ignorant are less likely to hold a passport than most democrat voters?

Then less innocently, I'm guessing that's not really how it's being fixed, and membership to the republican party will be accepted as valid id, even if you died 10 years prior...

Is that real or a fake news ?

For a supposed businessman he does seem to be driving custom away, and typhoon / rafaele/ gripen salesmen must be rubbing their hands together
It's real, he said tune them down 10%.

Probably worth looking into taking down the unit cost of a Eurofighter using more modern manufacturing methods (metal 3d printing etc) and old fashioned economies of scale by countries pooling to place a huge order (1000s). It's a generation old, but a lot of what the US/Russia/China uses is of a similar age. As we've seen for some reason in an age of nuclear weapons, basic mass of conventional weapons is respected. Europe replacing US conventional capacity mostly means replacing aerospace capabilities.

And they can’t be accused of leaking sensitive info, because Tulsi Gabbard said under oath that there was no sensitive material in the chat.

Whilst also refusing to disclose the full contents of the chat because it's confidential. How to have your cake and eat it! In theory there will be an investigation into this, quite who does it, what the terms of reference will be and if there's even a veneer or independence we wait to see

It's OK, Vance is off to Greenland to stir up the natives, so the news cycle will soon move on to the next outrage.

A classic piece of negotiation from JD, asking can he come and visit and on being told we'd rather not have you over retort we've got a military base and you can't stop me flying in.

That said this is good news for Greenland, yes they'd be mad to choose the USA over Denmark, even before they look at the respect Trump has for Native Americans, but they should be able to wrangle some extra funding out of Denmark who have tried to fund Greenland over the years with all the enthusiasm of George Osborne, or even a Rachel Reeves, being handed a spending proposal

I'm sure this is no problem, no problem at all...

Private data and passwords of senior US security policymakers are online

Donald Trump's most important security advisers discussed a military strike via signal chat. SPIEGEL searches now show that the problem is even greater. Mobile numbers of some participants can be found on the Internet.

By Patrick Beuth, Jörg Diehl, Roman Höfner, Roman Lehberger, Friederike Röhreke and Fidelius Schmid

26.03.2025, 20.17 pm

US Defense Secretary Hegseth: mobile number and private e-mail address from a commercial contact data contact provider

Private contact details of US President Donald Trump's most important security advisers can be viewed on the Internet. Research by SPIEGEL brought to light mobile numbers, e-mail addresses and some passwords.

Information from commercial personal search engines and customer data published on the network was used for the research. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, U.S. intelligence coordinator Tulsi Gabbard, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, are affected by the leaks.

Most of the publicly available numbers and mail addresses are probably still used by those affected. They are partly connected with profiles on Instagram and Linkedin, among others. They were used to create Dropbox accounts and profiles in apps that track running data. There are WhatsApp profiles for the respective telephone numbers, sometimes even signal accounts.

The research therefore occupies another serious security vulnerability in Washington, which was previously unknown. This publicly available data could hack enemy secret services about the communication of those affected by infecting their end devices using scouting software. It is therefore conceivable that foreign agents consult when Gabbard, Waltz and Hegseth discussed a military strike in a signal chat with others

25% tariffs on cars into USA = diversion from Signalgate debacle! I wait with interest and a high degree of scepticism to see if these tariffs actually go ahead, death knell for a President is to voluntarily raise the prices of cars for the American citizens. However as usual it is a 'flood the zone' tactic that will drag the media away from what is the biggest security failure in modern US history.

Meanwhile, masked ICE agents snatch a Turkish student off the streets for, allegedly, writing a piece in a student paper calling on the school to recognise a decision of the Tufts Community Union Senate acknowledge the "Palestinian genocide".

Whilst it's fun to laugh at the Signal stuff in a "these fuckwits have the codez" manner, there is some heinous shit going on in Anerica.

Canada to USA travel bookings down 70% on this time last year already.

AirNZ put a question on Bookface: "How many people are planning to go to USA in 2025 on holiday?" - 99% said "Fuck off!"

UK, Dutch and German travel advisory: "Be absolutely sure your travel documents are in order when travelling to USA to avoid being detained for a long period"

Travellers everywhere are worried about what's on the phones that might show they are critical of Trump.

Anecdotally everyone I know says they are going to give USA a swerve for the next 4 years.

This is going to get serious for the American Tourism industry.

In fairness as I recall from the pandemic MAGA are famously pro mask wearing.

What's not clear from the footage is whether the agents were clearly identified on their clothing who they worked for and what their identity is. Which is normally a requirement under law, okay Trump at times ignored that in his first term, and there'd be some leeway one assumes if say tracking a fugitive, but to kidnap a young woman doing nothing illegal... that seems a stretch

It would seem the agent talking to her explained who they are but still, it's very jack bootish

Our recent cruise out of Miami was, I would guess, 30% Canadians. If they go elsewhere I would imagine that becomes a huge problem.

We got through immigration fairly easily but it did take over an hour for the queue of 10 or 12 in front of us to get through. I would hate to see it busy.

I doubt we will be back anytime soon.

Also suggests they're not yet fully confident in a permanent transition to authoritarianism and don't want to be readily identifiable should there be any future inquests...

Would echo that anecdote , plenty of my chums giving USA a swerve this year, even my mate who goes to Florida every year. Be interesting to see if this leads to US hols slashing prices like what Egypt did after that massacre and all their bookings dried up

I think you haven't grasped just how betrayed, in particular, the Canucks feel over all of this !

All they need to do is swap Florida for Mexico, or the Caribbean, or Cube etc, etc, & the tour operators will stop selling holidays to Florida, & then businesses in Florida start laying people off, because n% of their expected footfall is now gone, & won't be back for four years, if ever, because once you get used to going on holiday to a new place, it'll take a significant incentive to switch back !

There are businesses that acted like scumbags during the early days of Covid, that I still haven't revisited; because I'm Irish, & I can hold a grudge for a bloody long time !

Hey, people like to characterize it as a vice, which it can be sometimes, but the Yanks seem to have a memory span less than a Goldfish, & look where that's landed them !

How can they already have forgotten the dumpster fire that was his last term, or pretty much any Republican term in the last few decades & not have known exactly what was going to happen this time ?

Canada saw it & was prepared.

The EU saw it & was prepared.

The UK saw it & was prepared.

China saw it & was prepared.

There wasn't even time for dust to have landed on all of these places plans to respond to any tariffs, but somehow the US didn't have plans to what would happen when they responded to this US initiated Trade War.

As a skinny short-arse who seemed to have a magnetic attraction for bullies, I had a simple plan; I could either let myself be a victim & accept that they would never stop; or I could recognize that they were actually just cowards themselves, & if I resisted & caused them some pain, then they'd rapidly fuck off & find someone who didn't respond to bullying by cowering, but instead kicked them in the balls & split some blood.

They've all seen this before & this time up they were better prepared, & unlike the last time up, Nations are able to act in concert, & the Tango Traitor can rage about Canada & the EU acting in concert, but there's the square root of fuck all he can do about it.

It's not that there isn't going to be pain, & people will lose their jobs in this senseless bullshit Trade War; but ultimately this is a continuation of the positive process that started when Covid exposed the vulnerabilities in Manufacturing supply chains, & just how exposed our economies were to such events.

The US can build the walls, but ultimately the rest of us are going to be better off because we'll cut off their infection.

The US Constitution doesn't just apply to US Citizens, or else they'd just ignore the 14th Amendment when it came to H1B Visa recipients & just make them slaves.

Ozturk has exactly the same rights to free speech as pond scum like Rubio, or Alex Jones, or MTG & to treat him any differently is, if he can afford to fund the fight, will fail in front of the Supreme Court.
