I think he said that was 12mill turnover per year, not profit. Though of course he was careful to avoid clarifying that when challenged on it.Jimmy Smallsteps wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 4:08 am Does anyone believe Jake when he claims the parent side makes 12 mill a year?
You'd have thought they would have reinvested more than $27.50 per annum into the back end.

I'm quite looking forward to it; there's nothing quite like the feel of a dying message board, it's agreeably spooky. You wander around the echoing halls that were recently full of activity, poking your head into this or that abandoned room, maybe post something and 2 weeks later another wanderer posts a reply. Then nothing.Dismal Pillock wrote: ↑Sun Jul 05, 2020 10:58 pmJeff the Bear wrote: ↑Sun Jul 05, 2020 10:47 pmeither through boredom, death or other life consequences, we will eventually see erosion of the denizens of this bored until there is no one left (or, more likely, we'll pass beyond a threshold where there isn't enough people to keep conversations going, and the rest will leave).
I don’t know much at all about such sites, but I guess there’s many mouths involved and if profit was a fraction of that as expected, you wouldn’t want to bother with it all for much less.Chrysoprase wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 5:45 amI think he said that was 12mill turnover per year, not profit. Which, I think, was OS's point. Friendly for PR in that they can then push more adverts.Ellafan wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 2:27 am PR may not be gone, but it is very likely going to mutate into something quite different.
Jake has stated that the forum will be transferred to a Xenforo platform. While that could be used to replicate the style of the old site, one of the reasons Jake cited for doing it is to be smart phone friendly. Xenforo has features like push-notifications for things on the forum/site that will pop up on the phone etc.

He didn't say that. He said it turned over 12 million (although I don't recall which currency now). I challenged him on how much profit that made just before I got zapped.Jimmy Smallsteps wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 4:08 am Does anyone believe Jake when he claims the parent site makes 12 mill a year?

I haven’t bothered researching Xenforo... I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but reading between the lines of a couple of Jake’s posts on this and following on from the whole Facebook experience, I expect to see the ‘new forum’ become much more of a social media driven beast. PR has a Facebook page I followed for a little while... there’s your click bait model. Post an ‘article’ replete with supreme ritin skillz and try to drive comment activity off that. There’s your traffic generated and that’s the income model sorted.Torquemada 1420 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 9:25 amWhich, I think, was OS's point. Ellafan has explained pretty well to us not in the know about why Planet Rugby should change the platform for the forum for their own purposes.
But what makes us think they'll actually do it? Does the PR leadership care about what happens in the PR forum? Are they competent enough to make anything actually happen? PR has had its anachronistic, clunky look for years without being changed.

Main site is awful. Disregarding the quality of the editorial content (because although we deride it, it might actually be aimed at a kids audience), the rest is terribleFujiKiwi wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 9:41 am Ellafan has explained pretty well to us not in the know about why Planet Rugby should change the platform for the forum for their own purposes.

- navigation is dire
- there are next to no stats stuff. I know cricinfo is the bar beyond all bars but PR has nada
- organisation is rubbish. Pointless having headings for things like Premiership, T14 etc only to find half the articles pertaining to that don't appear there
- does search even work at all?
It was one of my default sites for looking up team sheets (for the FR) which consistently exposed these failings. It seems to be a rugby thing anyway: IRB/WR is pitiful and it has more revenue than PR's 12m pa turnover....
Ironically, this is one aspect the French do very well in
- rugbyrama is very good all the way down to Fed 3
- the LNR site is okay for club stats
- and Midi Olympique is an excellent printed piece which has no equivalent elsewhere

Which would be the sort of thing you'd get in a kid's fanzine. I wonder if they were trying to appeal to a dumbed down audience (for differentiation) which, in rugby, really means kids (or some safas**) and then thought "Oh sh*t. How do we make money from a kid's audience". Maybe their advertisers don't look at the demos of clickers and so don't realise it's 9 years olds and the dimmer safas?Sandstorm wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 10:28 am"Whos' Hot and Who's Not"Torquemada 1420 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 10:22 am

What an odd duck you are. Earlier today you were tearing Jake a new one like a modern day Lt. Daniel Kaffee, now you've galloped onto this thread in his defence.Torquemada 1420 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 9:27 amHe didn't say that. Well, unlike Jake, I'm a stickler for the facts! Actually, although he did say turnover, this is Jake and your context is more relevant than my rebuttal i.e. he wanted to throw around the largest number he thought would impress!Jimmy Smallsteps wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 12:15 pmWhat an odd duck you are. I guess it's a question of where is the line between a sub-forum and a topic? Things like search, notify and bookmark cover most of it already.
Oh. And
I've popped over to see what's happening on PR a couple of times and I have to say I've left very quickly. After a week or so on here I just noticed how many fucking idiots there are over there. Much prefer it here.
All the money you made will never buy back your soul
Yeah same. I'll stay at the hotel california till it closes down but this place is far superior and now my first choice.
Hey, I've had fuckwits giving me shit on here before I'd even posted, so I think it's a wash. PR's a lost cause though.
Because you just dismissed this place and called the posters here fuckwits. Doesn't sound like its the place for you.
You've edited my post strangely but I should be clear that I consider the people giving me abuse before I posted to be fuckwits, not "the posters here" (which suggests everyone). Given that the crowd here is essentially PR refugees it shouldn't come as a shock.
Calling PR a lost cause and posting here suggests quiote strongly I haven't dismissed this place, just pointed out it's not fuckwit-free.
I hope that settles things. I look forward to a brighter future.
