Yep, that's the take away for me following this casually. It's vaccines not working on new strains that shits me up.
Basically anything that threatens the exit strategy
So, coronavirus...
Yes, but according to Jonathan Ashworth ..........
The news that the new variant of coronavirus may be more deadly is "deeply alarming," said the shadow health secretary, "not least because Boris Johnson assured the nation back in December there was no evidence the variant was more dangerous."
What. A. Shameless. Divisive. Exploitative...... add your own perjoratives. I despair of these people.

If one was to play politics with it, then the new strain being more deadly actually works for the government narrative surely.
They can imply the high death rate now is overwhelmingly due to the impact of the new strain and minimise the focus on their inaction pre Christmas.

That's the belief, certainly. Whether that's actually the case we don't knowBiffer wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 6:05 pmFrom what I've read, the way coronaviruses mutate means we'd be more likely to see a gradual reduction in effectiveness rather than a single mutation which snaps the vaccines to useless. Which would probably mean that it'd be a good few years before the vaccine needed to be changed.Margin__Walker wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 6:01 pmYep, that's the take away for me following this casually. Aren't the new rules in place now ?
So that in theory; all these people will have had a negative test before they got on the flights that brought them to the UK border ?
It still looks shit; but in theory, at least, they've all a test saying they aren't infected.

Up to 72 hours before; but there's still a decent window, and in that environment you would only need 1 or 2 carriers to infect the entire room.fishfoodie wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 9:05 pm Aren't the new rules in place now ?

Brother in law (immuno supressed following cancer) got his first shot at a drive through vaccination centre in Manchester today. Was apparently a very slick operation.
Definitely seem to be getting it done, so hopefully the only limiting factor will be supply.

I think it's pretty clear that there's a supply challenge right now. Whether it's manufacturing, testing, distribution, etc is less than obvious and the government aren't all that interested in sharing the detail.Margin__Walker wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 11:47 pm Brother in law (immuno supressed following cancer) got his first shot at a drive through vaccination centre in Manchester today. Wuhan marks its anniversary with triumph and denial
Wuhan has long since recovered from the world's first outbreak of Covid-19. It is now being remembered not as a disaster but as a victory, and with an insistence that the virus came from somewhere - anywhere - but here.
...
Instead of publishing its own evidence though, China appears to be taking an anywhere-but-Wuhan approach, with state media cheerleading the idea that the virus may have arrived in Wuhan on frozen food imports or talking cryptically of "multiple origins". At a recent daily press briefing, I asked China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Hua Chunying, why such narratives were being promoted in the absence of real scientific evidence.
"Your question reveals your prejudice against China," she replied. "Reports have emerged from Australia, Italy and many other countries that the coronavirus was found in multiple places in the autumn of 2019."
"Aren't these all facts?" she asked.
Not according to Alina Chan, a molecular biologist at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard who told me that such studies "lack validation" and some have been conducted without "the most basic controls".
"They do not present persuasive scientific evidence that the virus was circulating outside of China before the late 2019 outbreak in Wuhan," she said.
"The earliest detected cases and outbreak were in Wuhan. Early cases outside of China were found to have travelled from Wuhan. The most similar viruses have been found inside China."

Researchers at Oxford University are planning the first, large high-quality trial of a cheap drug that has been credited with dramatically reducing Covid-19 deaths in the developing world.
The Principle trial is hunting for treatments that could be used at home soon after symptoms appear. The aim is to find a medicine that makes an impact during the earliest stages of disease, preventing severe illness.
The next batch of medicines it will assess will include ivermectin. Used for decades to treat livestock and people infested with parasitic worms, it has been hailed as a Covid “wonder drug” by supporters.

I've seen some sites quote 28 days and 60 days.
There has been a sizable number of patients being re-admitted and subsequently dying, some of them would fall under the 60 days but some of them are longer term.
We started off at death certificate. Sometime around April/May we changed to 28 days, and applied that retrospectively, which resulted in a fairly hefty drop in total numbers on Worldometers. Like I say, there's also the ONS tracking death certificate numbersTichtheid wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 3:24 pmOpenside wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 3:15 pmfair enough. Giving a national total of 480k. That would work out at around 3.3 million a week if we could keep it up.
In other good news, the r is estimated to be between 0.8 and 1, with a drop in infections between 1% and 4% per week

“Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true.”
We are now at number 5 on deaths/million In order we have;
San Marino. 1,913
Gibraltar. 1,831
Belgium. 1,780
Slovenia. 1,601
UK. 1,429
Okay, probably a bit of a gap to close before we get on the medal table but with this lot in charge.........

“It was a pet, not an animal. It had a name, you don't eat things with names, this is horrific!”
1,429 per million is hardly carnage(its .15%) there have been worse years in the last 10 esp. if you accept that UK is taking every opportunity to put Covid 19 on the death certificate.
That's the number who had a positive test in the previous 28 days. It's a long way from the number with it on their death certificate and further still from the excess deaths.
It's also not yet over. And further still the long term effects don't appear on that list. Those who have permanently damaged lungs and hearts, those who's kidneys have been destroyed, stroke victims, amputees. None appear in that list but there's a lot of long term fucked out there as well.

Many people tend to support the authorities during a crisis..I would not read huge amounts into polling at the moment.
You're going to need to back that statement up with some actual facts.

Yeah. If it's actual facts we want, Scotland has its worst excess deaths outside WWI since 1891. I imagine the UK as a whole is similar.

Time to name and shame maybe?A student party that attracted people from up to 200 miles away has been broken up by police.
Some of the guests were found hiding in cupboards when officers raided the gathering in Lower Loveday Street, Birmingham, on Friday night.
One officer was assaulted as one guest made off but was not hurt, West Midlands Police said.
Party-goers had travelled to the event from places such as Newcastle, Nottingham and London.

Covid: Hackney railway arch rave attended by '300 people'
Police have issued more than £15,000 in fines after 300 people attended an illegal rave in a railway arch.
Officers raided an unlicensed music event in Nursery Road, Hackney, at 01.30 GMT on Sunday.
Many people fled the scene, while organisers padlocked the doors from the inside to stop officers getting in, police said.
No arrest were reported, but 78 fines of up to £200 for breaching lockdown restrictions were issued.
A dog unit and helicopter were deployed to the scene, with police saying they made numerous attempts to contact the organisers.
