So pleased for Townsend and Hogg. Fagerson was great after I’d bashed him a bit, Jonny was the player her should be. Redpath is a fucking star. I actually giggled like a girl when Kebble and Nel strolled on to finish the demolition.
England were shite, but we made them shite.
Over to you, Warren.
Jonny Gray was better than I've ever seen, Redpath is outstanding that pass to Turner for the try. Also Turner was unreal too. And Duhan I didn't think he'd body ensnf starters like he does Pro14 second stringers.
England were poor, you have to wonder why they played the Sarries lads. Billy Vunipola was anonymous apart from his yellow.

I was convinced they would blow it, by not converting their massive dominance into points. But they didn't.
So so fucking happy.
Apart from the initial few box kicks that Itoje charged down and the cheeky trip penalty, I don't think Price and Russell had poor games -very measured and controlled by their standards but Scotland were winning the kicking game hands down.
Finn should have slotted that penalty though and got the lead to beyond a converted try.
But that was a brilliant team performance. Best Scotland performance since... ancient history.

Empty stadium so not a real away win.
Stupid yellow card.
Not on a par with Saffer size and physicality.
Too few dominant tackles.
Well get that next year, guys coming up to Edinburgh and saying this year doesn't count.clydecloggie wrote: ↑Sat Feb 06, 2021 8:04 pmEmpty stadium so not a real away win.

The obvious answer to that is 'so you need the crowd to win? Can't beat us 15v15? OK, nice of you to admit to that.'
And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?
Difference was me was our dominant pack, front row were better in scrum and carrying, Gray Jnr and Cummings carried and tackled all day long and back row were all over their opposite numbers. Watson outplayed Curry, Wilson was anonymous and Big Billy just looked too big and ponderous and never got the pace of the game. Our set piece was miles better and our defence has come on leaps and bounds. Once you neutralise their dominant pack then the likes of Youngs and Farrell struggle on the back foot and their backs become disjointed.
I think Eddie picked the wrong team tbh with too much reliance on the old Sarries guys who looked miles off the pace.
Biggest difference for us was our attitude and confidence, never seen a Scottish team look so in control of their own game and their opponents.
Gatland will be struggling to find excuses now.

There's been a lot said about emotion lately, and Toony admitting he's gotten it all wrong in that respect, he mentioned Ireland at the world cup etc. It's looking like he's got the balance of getting us pumped up but not over emotional.
So I squares up, casual like.
Annoyingly, it seems the Aus equivalent of Sky no longer shows the 6N on demand, arose at 7 this morning to watch the whole game but have been cruelly relegated to the YouTube highlights. Hence, I can't say anything about specific passages of play or individual player performance, however, like everyone else here, I'm delighted with the win.
Up next against Wales at home, we can really build some momentum if we win that one- when was the last time we won back-to-back opening games?

That was, pure and simple, the best I have seen Scotland control a game against a Tier 1 side. Ever. And yes, I’m including the recent massive win v Australia in that.
We did to England what they have so often done to us - dominated the proceedings, milked penalties, didn’t let them have a sniff of the ball. Aside from one or two brain fart moments, it was a performance worthy of NZ. We didn’t lose a single lineout, the missed tackle count was in single figures, we conceded 6 penalties all game. That’s not just a win, it’s an utterly dominant performance. My sole complaint would be that we should have won by more.

It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

I expect big Jim to be completely magnanimous

Not sure if it's been mentioned already, but I thought Turner was epic. Explosive carrying and lineout spot on. Rambo and Brown have been average for too long, this is a kick up the arse they both need.
And I posted earlier that M Fagerson had served me some humble pie. Probably his best performance in a Scotland jersey.

Fagerson really did step up. I was impressed. Not a flawless performance, there were some errors in there as well, but anyone who thought he wasn’t big or tough enough to be an international 8 will be rethinking their opinion.

I’m tempted to stick my neck out here and say that this is a massive turning point for Scotland for the next decade.
To go down there and utterly dominate the number 2 team in the world should be a big psychological boost which I think most of us agree has been the missing bit.
Plus, we have a genuine talent in Redpath which adds to Finn, Hogg, Jones and VdM. That pack will not be bossed by anyone now.
My favourite moment in that match was Kebble and Nel running on and the look on Genges face in the background.
Been around long enough to know we might well lose the next 4 matches, but I dunno...

Let's enjoy the night and next few days.
Any talk of turning point or people cementing spots need this performance backed up in the rest of the 6N. We have seem many good one off performances before. It was only the last game where we got pumped off Ireland.

My favourite thing about today? It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t a day when we won because everything went our way. Some things went wrong. Both of our starting HBs had a bit of an off day. We left points out on the field. But this was a win we earned the hard way. It wasn’t that England were poor - we didn’t let them play. And we can do better.
Perhaps it will all fall apart against Wales, but for once I doubt it. We have momentum for once, and that rarity for a Scotland team - self-confidence. If we can boss England at Twickenham, we don’t have to fear anyone.

Absolutely. We need to keep the heed and take the same intensity in to the next game.

Keep seeing these posts saying we were poor at 9 and 10.
Owen Farrell is a Test Lion and was nowhere compared to Finn Russell. Who didn't do anything special, by his standards.
Ben Youngs would have been a Lion if his sister-in-law hadn't been battling the curse. He was nowhere compared to Ali Price. Who didn't do anything special, by his standards.
Perhaps a wee bit more credit? No team dominates a match like that with a pair of half-backs who don't know what they're doing.

That was great
It was good to be drinking after a Scotland game because I was happy not depressed
Jonny Gray was the best I;'ve seen - exeter has been good for hi
Matt Fagerson put two fingers up to those of us who doubted him
The subs didn't drop the standard
Whole team was good & can improve
However being Scotland we will win our next three games (including france away) and then lose to Italy on the final day!!

Please for the love of god don't tell me there was a three drink limit on Finn last night!
That was genuinely one of the most enjoyable 80 minutes of my Scottish rugby supporting 'career'. I was constantly saying that the points margin wasn't enough, but other than a very brief few minutes in the second half I never felt like there was an inevitability about an English score coming. Such a measured and controlled performance, and so gratifying to say it was that for a full 80 and not just 20, 40, 60 minutes or whatever. That is what makes it the most enjoyable I have watched - I genuinely think that is the first time I have seen Scotland dismantle a tier 1 nation, not sneak a lucky win or grind it out in apocalyptic weather or whatever. Just excellent.

No sorry, don't see it. His trip alone was enough for him to be getting the stick he is, it is just not acceptable that he can do that in such a match. He took a couple of really bad options that caused us all sorts of problems, attempts at drop goal were laughably bad, as were the kicks at goal, plus he kicked a few touch kicks straight out.clydecloggie wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 12:19 am Keep seeing these posts saying we were poor at 9 and 10.

He is meant to be our true world class player but I felt we won despite him not because of him.
Can you imagine what the score would have been with an in his prime Sexton in the team today.
Gray and Hogg easily had their best games. It looks like Exeter have finally instilled a bit of grunt in Gray. Watson was head a shoulders above the English back row. Sutherland and zander weren't far behind but I felt the Ritchie was quieter than I would like. Turner was also excellent as I expected he would be. Matt proved a few of us wrong but I still don't think he is the answer.walletoraccess wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 7:21 am That was great

After Price got over his Itoje issues I thought he was very good.
Redpath, VdM and Maitland were superb in everything they did.
As people have said, easily the most composed and dominant display I think I have ever seen.

I don’t mean to be unkind but is Gray a bit thick? I agree that his carrying looked significantly better yesterday; for me the only difference is that he is now targeting space between defenders rather than running straight at them. Just a little gentle footwork (I.e. a sidestep) seems to make all the difference. I can’t believe no coach has told him that in the 5 years of his pro career so far, has it just taken him all this time to learn?
On Price, he needs to cut the extra step out when box kicking behind the ruck. He was stepping beyond the pillar which made it easy for Itoje to get to him. Steele was kicking from a standing start and nobody got near him.

Yeah, Price seems to like a sideways step so that he can have the ball ahead of him, whereas Steele, like most 9's virtually kicks the ball over his head with his back to the game.KingBlairhorn wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 9:34 am I don’t mean to be unkind but is Gray a bit thick? He’s a bit of a blowhard but I thought this from Tom English was very true:
So much of the build-up circled around the myriad things the Scots would need to get right on the day and towards the top of every list read the name Finn Russell.
The fly-half would need to have a worldy of a game. Every kick, every pass, every break would have to be vintage Finn. His vast range of skills would need to be on display from first minute to last.
The truth is this was a victory of the collective. There were no miraculous moments from Russell, no scything plays, no passes like the thing of wonder from the Calcutta Cup in 2018, no mesmeric stuff redolent of the second half in 2019. Russell was decent, but nothing more. This win was about the team. [\quote]
