When I was in the OTC at school in the early 1970s we had an armoury with 150 Lee Enfields and a lot of .303 ammunition. We also has two Brens and ammo for them. Every private school in the area had similar, the theory being that we and local veterans could put up some resistance.
What was bizarre then, and is even more in retrospect, is that we also had racks of Martini Henry breech loading rifles, plus ammo. Exactly what anyone was going to do with them is a mystery, but every single weapon was meticulously maintained.

by the late 80s, we had drilled-barrelled Lee Enfields for Drill only
Hopefully kept plenty screwdrivers on hand to open the ammo boxes. That can cause all sorts of problems.mat the expat wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 4:11 amSadly, probably long destroyed nowadaysweegie01 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 04, 2023 8:37 pm Talking of obsolete.

I wouldn't say it was a myth. It's not the entire cause, far more to it than that, but there was elements of truth to it, accompanied by poor distribution of ammo on the whole.Brazil wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 9:35 amThat turned out to be a myth, unfortunately.Blackmac wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 9:28 amHopefully kept plenty screwdrivers on hand to open the ammo boxes. The Martini Henry was a great gun, the rounds could put a hole in you big enough to fuck.
I thought it was that Smith Dorrien got it wrong in his account and then Morris repeated it in The Washing of the Spears. The main causes were the line being too exposed so that when Durnford (who did run out of ammunition, on account of having gone out too far to reconnoitre) was overrun and the NNC folded, which exposed the right flank so that G Company was overwhelmed. After that they tried pulling back to the camp, but by that point the Zulu right horn had got round the back and they were wiped out piecemeal.Blackmac wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 9:41 amI wouldn't say it was a myth. Yeah, the lines being too exposed and widely spread was the main thing but there were accounts that unopened ammunition boxes were carried out to the lines without screwdrivers. Whilst they were able to get them open by brute force it certainly interrupted and slowed their rate of fire.Brazil wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 9:50 amI thought it was that Smith Dorrien got it wrong in his account and then Morris repeated it in The Washing of the Spears. Ah fair enough. The Academy is one of the few schools now that still has a rifle range (next to the sports hall). Probably the reason the army division of CCF is so popular…weegie01 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 5:34 pmNo, about 50 miles noth north east in God's country.pjm1 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 4:26 pmWere you at TGA perchance?!weegie01 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 04, 2023 8:37 pm Talking of obsolete.

I went to Morrison's and just assumed they still had a range. But the range was part of the swimming pool / gym (we did not havs sports halls in those days) complex. That has all been redeveloped.
Yeah my feelings exactly! I saw that on our TV news last night.Uncle fester wrote: ↑Sat Feb 11, 2023 7:20 amYulia needs to be told to get the fück out of Dodge for the sake of her child.TheFrog wrote: ↑Sat Feb 11, 2023 2:03 am Very moving story.
