No register of Family Trusts? At all?? Fuck me... no wonder NZ produces so many rip off merchants and con men. The environment is ripe for it... and everyone sees the assistance as a handout and accepts it gleefully.

It's the same as here in Oz

Family Trusts are dodgy - for every legitimate one, 100 are tax dodges

The John Key legacy - and I doubt Winnie would let them touch trusts either.

Was there a register of Family Trusts before the John Key years? I am surprised there isn’t now, it’s one of the things like the Companies Register that I assumed would go without saying.

No - but if you recall there was a huge call for one when the money laundering scandal hit in his second term. His response was "Look, I don't see it as a problem" that he used whenever he protected his mates.

I have no memory of that but thinking back, I became a first time dad in their second term so a lot of that time was a sleepless blur.

I do find it interesting with the overseas vote, firstly there are so many variables, and because of that I now realise it’s a non issue, but when I first thought about it, I thought how dare these people, who haven’t lived here for 10 years and have no intention of returning anytime soon, have a say in who does or doesn’t get to govern in a country they have no direct influence in... but then I thought, well their parents, or kids even, live there etc and I get it

On reflection I agree, just asked the wife( Pom) if she was able to vote and she had no idea, but is convinced she can’t
I know for a fact I can’t vote in a Zimbabwean election, not that it would make a bit of difference

Come to think of it I'm not sure if my Aussie wife gets a vote in Australia.

She's not a NZ citizen but certainly votes in the NZ election as a permanent resident.

I'm glad you do get it now, because I am very much invested in who is in power when I return to NZ next year.

For those who don't, take it up with the authorities. As the rules currently stand, you have to be a citizen and have visited NZ in the past three years.

I have not lived in NZ since 1982 and have not voted since then because I was never in NZ for long enough in the lead up to any election but this time I am eligible. The NZ govt home page is brilliant, making it very easy to register and download the ballot papers. I have now uploaded my completed ballots and am feeling very good that I have had my say in determining the state of the country in which my kids and grandchildren live. On top of that, I will probably end up living in NZ.

Looking at Crushers comments over the last few days, I cannot help but think she is aiming her comments at the National Party faithful instead of the swing voter

Too easily rebutted when she goes with the bullshit (e.g. Labour will be forced to implement the wealth tax or the Greens will bring it in when she's on holiday with Shaw as deputy P.M.) and the fat-shaming post for old big-hips - WTAF?
