This could be a red for multiple reasons.

Maybe not as bad as first seen. It's still surely a high shoulder charge, bracing himself or not.

He knows exactly what he’s doing but I reckon he’s standing his ground. White rolling around Sexton style

Really enjoying the good 45 seconds there of the co commentators whipping themselves into a frenzy over what is actually a perfect example of a player planting his feet and not at all trying to take the player out. Really funny stuff.

You can brace for impact if someone is running straight at you without the ball

First bit of patience and good decision making over a number of phases by either side in this game, and Scotland score a well worked try. Deserved.

Perhaps if he spent less time edging and more time trying to actually change direction in any way he might be more successful

He doen't change his line, but I really dislike this "bracing for impact" where you are presenting a tucked arm an shoulder into someone's chest.

PT would be harsh, but not entirely comfortable with it being play on either :?:

I don't mind them call. Becomes a proper grey area if there's head contact though.

Ever so slightly turns so that contact is made with his upper arm and away from his head.

It's not a tackle situation, he is the vulnerable player with someone sprinting hard directly at him and given he has few legal options here, allowing him to brace a tiny bit to protect himself is well within "rugby incident" status.

Head contact becomes far more likely if you don't let the vulnerable player turn their body like that.

So can we say Pendergast braced yesterday.

No, because Prendergast a) moved across illegally to block and b) put the shoulder into the jaw too

His was a deliberate illegal action.

It's more like how the laws allow ball carriers to brace for contact in exactly the same way. It's just common sense
