Have to wonder, is Jimmy Anderson really too injured to play? It seems totally bizarre A) to have Woakes in the team given his poor record overseas and b) Joe Root bowling so many overs on a green wicket.

You forgot that he’s also injury prone. I’m frankly astounded that he’s lasted nearly a whole tour.Big D wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 9:52 amThe media bumming up a mate is nothing new. If you are talking about being overrated by the media then I agree but I don't put too much weight on media opinions because they are often based on personal relationships. Sections of the media love players. Especially ones who do part time media work, or get them to help write their books etc. But you could lump almost all this England team in with him on that front especially Bairstow and Buttler. Up until now Woakes has a better economy rate by 0.1 runs per over across the series but he gets an easy ride too.JM2K6 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 9:39 amThe (print and broadcast) media fucking love Mark Wood and they gush about him as if he's Dale Steyn or even Brett Lee. He's not. He's fast but shite. He offers nothing except pace. His current series figures are fucking dismal in a series where a genuine quick should be making hay. He's taken 8 wickets at over 45, with only the injured Stokes having a worse economy rate. And yet even a week ago there were puff pieces about him. Because he's a nice guy and a touch odd.Big D wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 9:35 am
I don't think he is rated any higher than a quick, often inconsistent bowler to be fair. But the reality is they are down 2 quick fast bowlers in Archer and Stone so there are few alternatives for that role.
Overton probably deserved a run ahead of Woakes who is bang average away from home, and that is being kind.
As I write this, he's being flogged by Green and I have to go have a meeting instead of watching more of this dismal shit.
Wood is far too inconsistent and Root doesn't use his fast guys properly. Bowling short on this pitch is asking for trouble.
The media are far too cosy with this England team. Particularly the guys who have been around for a while.
Yeah he can't have played 4/5 tests too often.ScarfaceClaw wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 10:15 am

I think Wood is probably 3rd or the 3 fast bowlers if they were all fit IMO but even if Archer and Stone were available, I still don't think Root uses them properly. It doesn't help of course when Robinson is injured and England are left with 3 quicks and no all rounder to chip in on day 1. Root has turned his arm but they are a seamer short.
He must be injured, there is no reason to rest him as the WI tests aren't until March. Will be interesting to see what bowlers they take to the WI.not_english wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 10:14 am Have to wonder, is Jimmy Anderson really too injured to play? Potentially his last ashes test. Certainly in Straya. A wicket so green that most Australians wouldn’t recognise that colour and he’s not playing? Has to be injured. It seems an odd decision if he isn’t.Big D wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 10:34 amHe must be injured, there is no reason to rest him as the WI tests aren't until March. He is carrying an injury according to the radio here.ScarfaceClaw wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 10:41 amPotentially his last ashes test. Certainly in Straya. Woakes has been getting a lot of criticism this tour, people are fairly pointing out his failings overseas and it's widely acknowledged that he's half the bowler in Oz than he is in England (even though his career stats are much better than Wood's). He's having a shocking tour. Wood on the other hand is being treated across the media & in the live coverage like he's the second coming of Frank Tyson, when he's actually Fidel Edwards in whiteface. It's a damn shame Olly Stone can't stay fit.Big D wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 9:52 amThe media bumming up a mate is nothing new. I realise part of this is that we rarely get genuinely quick bowlers, so any we do get are treated like unicorns and aren't judged objectively.
Agree with that. Also mentioned back in the summer that Robinson's carrying a lot of extra weight and it's his one big problem right now. He's been consistently producing the goods, not that you'd know it given England's reluctance to acknowledge his success, but he does need to be a lot fitter.Big D wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 10:31 amYeah he can't have played 4/5 tests too often.ScarfaceClaw wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 10:15 am

Sensational test and series victory by South Africa. India remains without a series victory in South Africa.
Well done lads!
After yesterday's antics by India, this win is quite satisfying. Kry vir julle!

What a comeback to win that series! I'd hate to be playing cricket in Cape Town today. Its about 36 degrees in the Southern Suburbs with very little breeze. Elgar, Bavuma, Petersen, Jansen and KG all get top marks imo. Lots of steel and application showed.
I think we are broadly in agreement.JM2K6 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 10:59 amWoakes has been getting a lot of criticism this tour, people are fairly pointing out his failings overseas and it's widely acknowledged that he's half the bowler in Oz than he is in England (even though his career stats are much better than Wood's). Overton should have been playing today for one of Woods/Woakes.
England have a bit of a bowling conundrum ahead of the March WIndies tour. Robinson, Anderson and Broad are their best bowlers and Woakes is poor abroad and Wood too inconsistent/not used correctly and Overton not bowled since god knows when. Leach is rotten, although treated poorly and Bess wasn't really trusted.
Do they look to bring in a Mahmood, Cook or Fisher? Maybe the guy from Durham (I think) to freshen up the pace attack? Is Curran fit? Is Curran good enough abroad?
Do they persist with Leach when they know and he knows that they don't trust him? Do they go to Bess, Crane or Parkinson? Bess got gubbed by Aus A.
If Stokes can't bowl do they look at squeezing in an all rounder like Bohannon (who they seem to like) who whilst not a bowler first can bowl 4-5 overs to give a break? Half jokingly I'd go for the zero fucks option and let Livingstone loose in the West Indies. We're as well being entertained.

True, but there was a single there if Burns had gone hard on the call.

I'd rather have the Irish , the Aussies will just turn this forum into Planet Rugby mk2. I see south Africa is scheduld to play 2 away tests against the Black Caps next month. I wonder if it will go ahead considering the covid restrictions in New ZealandOomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 7:47 amWas hoping to get some Aussies over here. When it comes to cricket they are most arrogant cheats and pricks.
With omicron expected to be widespread here within weeks, it's anyone's guess.
Our later tour of Aus is also in doubt as there's no guarantee the players can get MIQ places upon their return.

Will be sad if we can't play the Black Caps.
Why would they allow Bangladesh and not the Proteas?
Maybe play in South Africa then. We are past our peak and may allow spectators in a week or two

After much suffering I am so happy to see the Proteas moving forward.
Now the vokken politicians can leave Boucher and Graeme Smith doing their job.
Is NZ planning to open up or would the people rather remain isolated?

I was under the impression that our bowling attack was pretty decent, but you are making it sound as though it's all due to unplayable pitches.

Not that moronic. My NZ relatives and friends tell me that there is a kind of tension between those wanting a faster opening up and those who are quite happy to draw out the process. Obviously there are polar views held by extremists on both sides and the majority sit somewhere on a scale between those poles.

Being run out for a duck is beyond negligent.
Yeah, I have zero connection to NZ but it will be interesting to see what they do. Omicron won't be the last variant so will they shut down/ delay opening when the next variant appears? A New Zealaners perspective would be interesting.FalseBayFC wrote: ↑Sat Jan 15, 2022 8:09 amNot that moronic. Also, your bowling attack is pretty decent.
